Mit der Ausweitung der Aktivitäten von Unternehmen über nationale und Kulturgrenzen hinaus, d.h. ihrer "Internationalisierung", entsteht das Problem der Auseinandersetzung zwischen und das Zusammenwirken von verschiedenen Kulturen in einer Organisation. Sie wirft für die Wirtschaftswissenschaft neuartige Fragen auf, denn der Weg vom international tätigen zum internationalen Unternehmen ist weit. Die vorliegende Arbeit führt in das Ver- ständnis und damit in die Behandlung dieses Themas ein. Ausgangsfrage und -hypothese der vorliegenden Untersuchung ist die prinzipielle Möglich- keit und Vorteilhaftigkeit der Nutzung kultureller Differenzen in international tätigen Unter- nehmen, die diese Differenzen bislang zumeist eher als unvermeidbare, jedoch möglichst zu minimierende Begleiterscheinung des eigenen Internationalisierungsprozesses ansehen. Das Beispiel japanischer Firmen ist dabei angesichts der großen Bedeutung ihrer global gestreu- ten Direktinvestitionen nicht nur von besonderer Aktualität, sondern bietet auch instruktive Einblicke in die Schwierigkeiten, aber auch die Chancen beim Umgang mit dem kulturell Anderen. Die vielf"altigen Aspekte, die eine Behandlung dieser anspruchsvollen Thematik berührt, bedürfen eines durchgängig interdisziplinären Ansatzes, dessen Umsetzung hier als äußerst gelungen bezeichnet werden kann. So ist diese Arbeit für den theoretisch wie praktisch orientierten Ökonomen ebenso von Interesse wie etwa für den Japanologen, indem sie weit in die Problematik der Regional-und Kulturwissenschaften vorstößt. Für die Entwicklung einer umfassenderen Theorie des interkulturellen Managements sind damit inhaltliche und methodische Grundlagen aufgezeigt, die eine wichtige Referenz für die zukünftige Forschung sein werden.
