Pequeñas, vivaces, coloridas e inteligentes, las abejas constituyen una especie en la naturaleza solamente comparable a las hormigas. Organizadas en comunidades de miles de individuos, con reinas, soldados y lacayos, no sabemos si ha sido el ser humano quien ha copiado esa jerarquía o es simplemente un dictado natural para ciertas especies animales. Poseen, además, otras cualidades que también se encuentran reproducidas en los seres humanos, como el trabajo comunitario para lograr un fin, el ejército que proporciona seguridad en el interior de su hábitat pero que, simultáneamente, también protege de los enemigos externos, así como el entendimiento en la recolección de los alimentos para épocas de escasez. Las abejas también se parecen a las avispas, sus primas hermanas (aunque en realidad surgieron de ellas), y al igual que éstas la mayoría de las abejas hembras tienen un aguijón funcional que emplearán para solucionar violentamente sus problemas internos o para defenderse con su picadura de sus enemigos, humanos o animales. No sabemos las causas por las cuales las avispas se dividieron en dos especies, una más agresiva que la otra, aunque encontramos esta similitud en los lobos y el perro, lo que quizá indica que la mano del hombre, al convivir con ellas, modificó sus costumbres poco a poco.Una gran mayoría de las especies de abejas son solitarias y cada hembra hace su propio nido, donde almacena provisiones para sus larvas. Algunas abejas, sin embargo, son comunales y la diferencia es que varias hembras pertenecientes a la misma generación comparten el mismo nido, construyendo cada una sus propias celdillas para alojar los huevos, larvas y pupas. Finalmente, unos cuantos tipos de abejas son semisociales, pues viven en pequeñas colonias de dos a siete miembros de la misma generación, uno de los cuales es la reina, o principal ponedora, mientras que las demás son trabajadoras. Las abejas comunales hacen nidos y celdillas similares, pero en su caso, cada nido (por un túnel excavado en el suelo) está ocupado por varias abejas. Las abejas semisociales hacen también nidos y celdillas como los de sus parientes solitarias, pero la construcción y aprovisionamiento de éstas es, a menudo, una tarea conjunta. Finalmente, las abejas altamente sociales, unos pocos cientos de especies, forman colonias permanentes en las que la reina y las castas trabajadoras presentan estructuras muy diferentes, cada una de ellas especializada en una determinada tarea e incapaz de sobrevivir sin las demás. No es extraño, pues, que tal perfección social y organizativa no tuviera su fruto, en esta ocasión tan dulce como la miel, con el cual se alimentan ellas mismas, si antes el ser humano y algunos animales no se lo han arrebatado. Y junto a este alimento de los dioses, nuestros diminutos insectos nos aportan tres milagros de la naturaleza, la Jalea real, el Polen y el Própolis, dotados cada uno de tantas cualidades que resulta imposible encontrar en toda la naturaleza algo similar. Las razones por las cuales el Creador decidió dotar a tan pequeños seres de la capacidad para fabricar tan extraordinarios productos no la sabemos, pero debe ser suficiente interrogante como para que las cuidemos y apreciemos cada vez un poco más.
