About the Book

The Portland Gale" was one of the largest hurricanes to ever hit the United States. The damage done was massive. More US ships were destroyed in this storm than any other. The death toll huge. It also changed the US coastline. Few people today know about it, yet at the time it was headline news. The storm was named after a side paddle wheeler boat named the USS Portland. The sailing rout was to travel out of Boston Harbor to Portland Maine and back. At the time, roads were small and not maintained. Traveling by ship was by far the fastest mode of transportation. The USS Portland accommodated two hundred passengers and crew. On a fateful night, only three weeks into his job, he ignored warning flares and bells by three other ships who had turned around once they hit open sea, and sought shelter for their ships. Instead he steamed forward into the storm churned waves of the Atlantic Ocean. This decision cost the lives of all aboard. If you counted all of the US vessels sunk in US history and compared it to the loss of ships in the Portland Gale, the total number would be less than the number of ships sunk in this one storm! As a teacher, I realized that the past often shapes the present and future. This is the first book in a series. My goal is to research real events that shaped US history and then write about them so that readers from upper elementary school, to anyone at any age, who loves to read historical fiction, will enjoy this book. The two main characters are descendants from real people, who survived the storm and became known as heroes for the amazing deeds they did during this hurricane. Jake Stanley has moved to the town of Scituate to a new school and he has no friends. He also has a dark secret that he has never shared. Becky Jacobs is his next door neighbor and school mate. She has just lost her mother to cancer. They form a friendship when they team up to do a social studies project together. They decide to find out about The Portland Gale. As their friendship grows, they find out about their past ancestors and they find their own ways to deal with their present lives. Jake Stanley's Find is multifaceted and changes his life forever. Those who read this book will be surprised at the devastation this hurricane caused and the coastline of the USA was changed forever because of it. It is a good read!
