Sofort sticht die Übereinstimmung des Protagonisten Thomas Glavinic und dem Autor Thomas Glavinic ins Auge, denn auch er ist ein österreichischer Schriftsteller und hat den Roman Die Arbeit der Nacht geschrieben. Somit kann Das bin doch ich als Zusammentreffen von Autobiographie und Roman sowie Fiktion und Wirklichkeit, verstanden werden. Der Autor Glavinic spielt in seinem Roman mit der "Wirklichkeit und ihrer Verdopplung, mit der Wahrheit und ihrer Erdichtung". Die Ebenen der Dichtung und der Realität sowie die Grenzen der Gattungen verschwimmen vollkommen.
