About the Book

English summary: The figure Ismael reminds, that the blessing and remaining care of the God of Israel is valid for the non-israelite peoples out of the descendants of Abraham as well. Concerning the tale itself Ismael is neither enemy nor counterpole to Isaak, as Paulus depicted in Gal 4, but promise and antecedent. As such he shares God's blessings and impositions with his brother without being Israel's heir. Thus Genesis offers a theologically reflected, inclusive view on Ismael and his mother Hagar. Regarding Thomas Naumann's results it becomes clear, that the negative view on Abraham's firstborn son which dominates the history of reception cannot rely on the story of Genesis.
About the Author: Dr. theol. habil. Thomas Naumann ist seit 1997 Professor fur Biblische Theologie und Biblische Exegese (Altes Testament) an der Universitat Siegen.
