Carnal y Serafín son hermanos gemelos, viven en una pequeña isla que en un pasado no muy lejano fue prisión y patíbulo para reos del continente, y donde hubo inexplicables sucesos, desapariciones y alguna muerte violenta. Ambos comparten la casa familiar con sus abuelos, Anselmo, acosado por una demencia senil prematura y cuyo único entretenimiento es ver en la televisión los dibujos animados de Mickey, y Adelina, maestra retirada, mujer de enorme entereza pero que extravía su presunta cordura asistiendo a fraudulentas reuniones espiritistas.
Ambientada en los días en los que Rusia lanza al espacio a la perra Laika a bordo del Sputnik II, la acción se desarrolla en una atmósfera sofocante donde los personajes, en razón a extrañas circunstancias, van descubriendo el oscuro pasado que signa a la familia y al resto de los habitantes de la isla, condenados a padecer el infortunio a raíz de un terrible antepasado, el sanguinario verdugo de la cárcel. Carnal, tiene como pasatiempo observar unos insectos necróforos que cria en un terrario y cartearse con su tío Rodrigo, emigrado a Australia años atrás.
La rutinaria armonía, el tedio de la casa y un enfermizo cariño que los hermanos se profesan, se trastornan con la llegada a la isla de Nerea, una hermosa joven finlandesa aficionada a coleccionar caracolas y conchas marinas.

Incomodo. Así es como parece ser que Romero quiere que te sientas mientras lees su obra, y no son pocos los elementos de los que dispone para conseguirlo, añadiendo a cada ingrediente nuevo un peso extra a una atmósfera ya cargada y dominada por la pesadumbre y las malas sensaciones. Con una prosa magnífica, en una extraña comunión que une la primera y la tercera persona donde los diálogos se juntan con la narración y misteriosamente pese a la sensación de incomodidad que no nos abandona, uno no solo se acostumbra, sino que se deja llevar, Norberto Luis Romero crea con ISLA DE SIRENAS una pequeña pieza fundamental en el teatro grotesco hispano, como contemplar la obra maestra de un embalsamador y esperar, pese a las mutilaciones y rasgos que únicamente la muerte es capaz de crear, a que el cuerpo abra los ojos y nos sonría con tristeza.

Grandísimo escritor de culto, de minorías, que narra de manera exquisita y personal las más grotescas perversiones. Y pese a eso, deja muy buen sabor de boca.
Él mismo dice que "el arte es generar tensión y mantenerla de manera creciente a lo largo de toda la narración y hacer que estallen no en los personajes, sino en el alma o la conciencia del lector. Son los lectores los que deben padecer el drama, no los personajes, éstos son meros transmisores". De manera que estructura los acontecimientos a lo largo de la historia, impidiendo apenas que cojamos aire.
