Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2001 im Fachbereich Amerikanistik - Linguistik, Note: 2, Bayerische Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (Anglistik und Amerikanistik), Veranstaltung: HS: Indirektheit im Englischen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Ironie als eine Form der sprachlichen Indirektheit stellt ein linguistisches Phänomen dar, das heutzutage aus dem Alltag beinahe nicht mehr wegzudenken ist, ganz gleich, von welchen gesellschaftlichen Gruppen oder unterschiedlichen Altersstufen man nun ausgehen mag. Sie ist heute in der gesprochenen Alltags- wie auch in der Schriftsprache und oftmals auch in der Literatur ein allgegenwärtiges rhetorisches Stilmittel, um etwas oder jemanden auf subtile Art und Weise unter dem auffälligen Schein der eigenen Billigung der Lächerlichkeit preiszugeben. In dieser Arbeit soll nun zunächst der Begriff der Ironie definiert und analysiert, anschließend die beiden Ironiemodelle nach Grice und Leech erläutert und schließlich einige ironische Textstellen in Oscar Wildes Gesellschaftskomödie The Importance of Being Earnest -hauptsächlich nach Grice- näher untersucht werden, da gerade dieses 1895 entstandene Werk ein hohes Maß an Ironie und Farce verspricht. Der exzentrische Wilde, der von 1854-1900, also während der Regierungszeit Königin Viktorias (1837-1901) lebte, war ein führender Vertreter der ästhetischen Bewegung des L′art pour l′art, die eine Ästhetisierung sämtlicher Lebensbereiche zum Ziel hatte, und führte das ausschweifende Leben eines Dandys, der sich bewusst über die Normen der viktorianischen Ära hinwegzusetzen suchte. 1895, auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Karriere, wurde er wegen homosexueller Praktiken zu zwei Jahren Zuchthaus mit Zwangsarbeit verurteilt, was seinen finanziellen und gesellschaftlichen Ruin sowie letztlich seinen psychischen Zusammenbruch zur Folge hatte. Nach seiner Entlassung emigrierte Wilde nach Paris, wo er am 30.11.1900 starb. In seinen geistreichen Satiren, zu denen auch The Importance of Being Earnest zählt, k
