English summary: The author takes readers on a vast historical tour of the Straits of Otranto in this second volume on the ancient Greek Adriatic, combining literary prose with erudite scholarship to examine the principal sites, events, and characters that complicate the region's past. Italian description: L'intenzione iniziale era quella di scrivere un saggio di ampio respiro sul canale di Otranto in eta antica, dalla navigazione arcaica all' egemonia romana, ma poi il libro, quasi inavvertitamente, mi e sfuggito di mano. L'ampio respiro e forse rimasto, ma in un volume che non si configura piu come frutto di saggistica impegnata, bensi come risultato di un' indagine mirata sul particulare' e quindi per piu aspetti innovativa. Il limite e che il lettore avvezzo a sfogliare i libri di storia sugli scaffali delle librerie, se non mai cimentatosi in temi di antichistica, lo potra trovare di non agevole approccio; il pregio e che anche l'addetto ai lavori potra trarre giovamento dalla sua scrittura distesa con traduzione di tutte le testimonianze richiamate in discussione e senza un soverchiante (e spesso inutile) apparato di note. Ma perche il libro e mutato in corso d'opera? Perche, di necessita allargandosi il campo di ricerca, ho dovuto in non pochi casi procedere a revisioni e ad approfondimenti di quanto talora ho scritto, senza piu rileggermi, oltre quaranta anni fa. Ero allora un giovanissimo studioso, dotato piu di passione che di dottrina. Se il tempo non ha affievolito la prima e, viceversa, ha incrementato la seconda, anche questo libro non sara stato inutile. Le sue pagine, di fatto, si cimentano con cio che non ho mai scritto, ma che da sempre avrei voluto (forse dovuto) scrivere. Per questo il sottotitolo rimanda a Grecita adriatica. Si come secondo supplemento', ma questa volta come supplemento' unitario, autonomo e di spessore monografico. Dunque, dopo Hellenikos kolpos, Ionios poros! Un tema che finora avevo trascurato nelle mie ricerche almeno nella sua dimensione piu ampia e totalizzante. Un libro dove preciso la funzione, talora complementare, della seconda rotta per l' occidente con approdo, non a Otranto o dintorni, ma al Gargano; dove riesamino la centralita del ruolo di Corcira sull' arco di piu secoli; dove, alla luce della realta di Pelagosa/Palagrua, riconsidero il problema delle rotte adriatiche; dove indugio sul rapporto tra le leggende diomedea e troiana e cretese, chiarendo - anzitutto a me stesso - l' esegesi di due tormentati luoghi licofronei. Ma non solo. E' questo anche un libro nel quale alcune indagini mirate, con piu affinata rilettura delle fonti, mi hanno consentito di chiarire come proprio Otranto sia stata sede di una delle due apoikiai adriatiche del secondo Dionigi (l' altra e forse stata Siponto) e poi un phrourion di Alessandro il Molosso; di riscoprire, inoltre, un'imitatio Achillis, mai presa in considerazione, in un gesto teatrale di Pirro; di determinare, ancora, perche, dopo Canne, Annibale da Capua sia di nuovo tornato sulla costa adriatica - in Daunia e nel Salento - trascurando di valersi del vantaggio della sua grande vittoria per piombare su Roma, stremata e demoralizzata. Ovviamente molti altri temi affronta il libro, che lascio al lettore di riscoprire e valutare nella loro consistenza. Accomiatandomi da lui, mi sia pero consentito di indirizzare un ringraziamento, non di circostanza, a Flavio Raviola, che, a partire dal volume trentesimo, dirige Hesperia. Flavio, il subalpino, l' unico tra i miei allievi piu maturi degno di questo nome! Cui, nel ricordo, non posso non associare i miei ultimi, e piu giovani, scolari patavini Andrea Debiasi ed Elena Pastorio, nonche l' adottata e carissima Maddalena Bassani.
