Parece ser que los ángeles fueron formados en el segundo o quinto día de la creación, estableciéndose cuatro arcángeles únicos, Gabriel, Miguel, Rafael y Uriel, quienes poseen emanaciones de la luz divina, así como una inteligencia incorpórea similar a la de Aristóteles, tal y como describe el filósofo judío medieval Maimónides. En el pensamiento bíblico los ángeles son mensajeros divinos de Dios, que se distinguen por su función (en griego angelos significa sencillamente "mensajero") más que por su aspecto exterior. Su papel es comunicar o llevar a cabo la voluntad de Dios para los individuos o las naciones. En el Antiguo Testamento Dios está también representado de manera especial por el "ángel de Yahvé," que a veces no se distingue de él, mientras que los ángeles individuales a quienes se ha confiado la voluntad de Dios para la Humanidad, forman parte de la incontable multitud celeste de ángeles que continuamente le adoran y alaban. Del mismo modo, en el Nuevo Testamento los ángeles están implicados en los anuncios del nacimiento y resurrección de Cristo, y vienen a fortalecerle en momentos de crisis como sus tentaciones en el desierto y la agonía de Getsemaní antes de la crucifixión. También se dice que existen ángeles de la guarda para los individuos -posiblemente uno para cada ser humano- (por ejemplo, dando mensajes a Pedro y Pablo en sueños) y para las iglesias, quedando bien claro que ellos serán quienes envíen las plagas y la guerra a los incrédulos, encargándose también de tocar las trompetas del Apocalipsis. El príncipe de todos ellos es Miguel, el arcángel, inferior a Cristo, con poderes celestiales similares a los ángeles demoníacos o caídos, estos últimos tan inteligentes y poderosos que han conseguido arrastrar una y otra vez a los humanos a la perdición. Y es que los diablos son agentes capaces de influir negativamente en la conducta humana, y aunque son pintados normalmente como masculinos, también se conocen diablesas, siendo igualmente frecuente verlos descritos como una serpiente capaz de hablar con las personas. El Diablo es indudablemente la encarnación del mal, el jefe de los espíritus malos o ángeles caídos, y la conducta humana irracional o destructiva puede explicarse por la posesión diabólica o demoníaca, como si alguna fuerza maligna tomara posesión de la voluntad de una persona. Ambos, demonios y ángeles, han sido objeto en los últimos años de nuevos y apasionantes cultos, y un creciente número de personas han relatado sus experiencias con entidades angelicales o demoníacas, las cuales han afectado profundamente sus vidas, y en muchos casos las han transformado por completo.
