Herzogliche Hochzeitseinladungen sind zwar ephemere Texte, im Falle des burgundischen Hofs ergeben sie zusammengenommen aber ein aussagekraftiges Bild: Die zunachst Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts in Flandern nachweisbare Ubung, dass die eng vernetzten stadtischen Oberschichten der Grafschaft sich gegenseitig auf die Hochzeiten laden, greift auf den burgundischen Staat insgesamt uber, bis unter Karl dem Kuhnen die Listen der Einladungen zu den Festen der Familien der hochsten Amtstrager, aber auch der herzoglichen Sekretare und Kleinerer sich wie die Liste der Generalstande liest, von Amsterdam bis Amiens (das sich weigert), von Abbeville bis Dijon reicht (das sich ziert), ja auf Koln und Kleve ausgreift. Im zeitgenossischen Frankreich ist nichts dergleichen zu beobachten. Auffalligerweise spielt der alte Adel dieses Spiel nicht mit (obwohl auch hierfur Beispiele gegeben werden), verfugt offensichtlich uber andere Weisen, das soziale Netz auszuwerfen. Herzogin Isabella von Portugal vermehrt indes auf diese Weise die Aussteuer ihrer Verwandten. Das vorliegende Buch stellt zunachst den Hergang dar, interpretiert ihn dann, und lasst eine Folge von 125 mehr oder minder umfangreicher Dossiers folgen. Am umfangreichsten und deshalb kartographiert sind diejenigen der Hochzeiten des Guillaume de Bisches 1466, des Jean III Gros 1472 und des Guillaume de Clugny 1476. Den deutschen Leser wird auch die reiche Uberlieferung zur Hochzeit des Peter von Hagenbach interessieren. Die Veroffentlichung ist Teil des internationalen Projekts 'Prosopographia Burgundica'. Der Autor: Werner Paravicini, Jahrgang 1942, lehrte von 1984-1993 mittelalterliche Geschichte in Kiel und leitet seither das Deutsche Historische Institut in Paris. Er arbeitet vor allem uber die Welt von Hof und Adel, derzeit besonders uber die Herzoge von Burgund und unter diesen vornehmlich uber deren letzten, Karl den Kuhnen. Er schrieb die Biographie des Guy de Brimeu, eines seiner wichtigsten Rate (1975), skizzierte dann das Leben des Herzogs selbst (1976) und sammelte mit Schulern seine Korrespondenz (Inventar 1995). Weiteres ist in Vorbereitung. Voici plus de cent cas entre 1399 et 1489 ou le duc de Bourgogne, la duchesse, le fils parfois, ont invite aux noces de leurs serviteurs - ou des serviteurs le leurs serviteurs, grands et pe-tits, nobles nouveaux plus que nobles anciens, pour que l'on vienne leur faire honneur et de leur apporter des cadeaux. Ce qui semble de prime abord un abus, une contrainte, un racket, se revele etre en meme temps un moyen d'integration de l'Etat bourguignon naissant, d'abord limite a la Flandre urbaine, puis s'etendant a l'ensemble des territoires bourguignons, de la Hollande-Zelande et la Gueldre, au Brabant, Hainaut, Namur, a l'Artois et la Picardie (qui en partie resiste) jusqu'a la Bourgogne proprement dite. Meme le duc de Cleves et la ville de Cologne sont mis a contribution, sous Charles le Temeraire, quand le phenomene atteint son apogee. Parmi les individus concernes on trouve le Grand Batard Antoine, Adolphe de Cleves, Guillaume de Bisches, Pierre de Ha-genbach, Jean III Gros, les Clugny et le clan des chanceliers Goux et Hugonet, beaucoup de secretaires, un queux et meme quelques herauts d'armes. La publication de ces lettres, pieces comptables, extraits de comptes et de chroniques, et quelques rares textes legislatifs, si elle illustre un phenomene jusqu'ici ignore, est un premier pas vers une future 'Prosopographia Burgundica' de tout le personnel employe par les grands ducs Valois.
