Na metafísica tomista, o tratado da existência de Deus está intimamente ligado ao tratado de sua natureza. Ambos compõem a teodicéia de São Tomás. Por isso, no volume VII começamos estudando as clássicas Cinco Vias, que o Aquinate argumentou para concluir em um Primeiro motor imóvel, uma Primeira causa Incausada, o Ser necessário por antonomásia, o Primeiro ser em graus de perfeição e o Primeiro ordenador do Universo. Aquele "a Quem todos chamamos Deus". No volume VIII, introduzimos-nos na natureza ou essência divina, e desenvolvemos tudo relativo aos seus atributos entitativos. No presente volume IX, estudaremos os atributos operativos de Deus. Que estão vinculados: à Ciência divina (operações intelectuais), à Vida divina (operações de Deus como vivente), à divina Vontade (operações do querer de Deus), ao Amor (operações específicas do querer o bem das criaturas), à justiça e misericórdia divinas (operações pela qual dá a cada um o que lhe corresponde), à Providência (operações de previsão e governo do mundo), à Onipotência (operações de sua potência ativa infinita) à Bem-aventurança divina (operações vinculadas ao seu entendimento). É certo que o intelecto humano não pode conhecer a Deidade, isto é, a essência de Deus em Si mesma. Os limites traçados pela nossa finitude são excedidos pela infinitude divina. No entanto, o método analógico nos permite ascender a Deus e conhecê-lo a partir das essências de seus efeitos (os entes). Enfrentaremos numerosos obstáculos e, seguramente, não será menor o perigo de cair no antropormofismo ou o de confundir teodicéia com Teologia revelada. Mas o desafio vale a pena. Se confiarmos no poder da razão humana para conhecer a verdade, não devemos temer. É evidente que essas palavras são um pouco estranhas nesta época de relativismo e ceticismo extremos. Mas as modas passam e a verdade permanece. E nossa tarefa é nos esforçar para desvelá-la. O trabalho é dividido em uma Introdução, oito Capítulos e um Epílogo. Os Capítulos são os seguintes: 1-A ciência de Deus. 2-A vida de Deus. 3-A vontade de Deus. 4-O amor de Deus. 5-A justiça e a misericórdia divinas. 6-Deus é providente. 7-Deus é onipotente. 8-Deus é bem-aventurado. Abundam as notas, principalmente da "Suma Teológica" e da "Suma contra os Gentios", nas quais o Doutor Angélico desenvolveu estes temas com generosidade. Com este volume, concluímos o que está relacionado ao tratado de Deus na metafísica tomista, e nos preparamos para o estudo do ato de Criação, dos entes puramente formais e da alma humana.
