Nella metafisica tomista, si afferma che il trattato sull'esistenza di Dio sia intimamente legato al discorso sulla sua natura, costituendo entrambi la Teodicea di San Tommaso.

Così, nel Volume VII, abbiamo intrapreso l'esame delle Cinque Vie Classiche, che, secondo l'Aquinate, portano all'identificazione di un Primo Motore Immobile, di una Prima Causa Non Causata, dell'Essere Necessario per eccellenza, del Primo Essere in gradi di perfezione e del Primo Ordinatore dell'Universo-che comunemente chiamiamo Dio.

Il Volume VIII ci ha introdotti alla Natura o Essenza Divina, esplorando i suoi attributi entitativi.

In questo Volume IX, la nostra attenzione si rivolge agli attributi operativi di Dio. Questi attributi comprendono la Scienza Divina (operazioni intellettuali), la Vita Divina (operazioni che emanano da Dio in quanto Essere Vivente), la Volontà Divina (operazioni derivanti dalla volontà di Dio), l'Amore (operazioni specifiche della volontà rivolte al benessere delle creature), la Giustizia e la Misericordia Divina (operazioni attraverso le quali ogni entità riceve la propria giusta parte), la Provvidenza (operazioni che implicano la preveggenza e il governo del mondo), l'Omnipotenza (operazioni che emanano dalla Sua infinita potenza attiva) e la Beatitudine Divina (operazioni associate alla Sua intelligenza).

È riconosciuto che l'intelletto umano non può afferrare la Deità, cioè l'essenza di Dio stesso, poiché la nostra natura finita è trascenduta dall'infinito divino. Tuttavia, attraverso il metodo analogico, possiamo elevarci verso Dio e comprenderlo attraverso le essenze dei Suoi effetti (enti). Anche se dobbiamo superare molte difficoltà e guardare al rischio di cadere nell'antropomorfismo o confondere la Teodicea con la Teologia rivelata, lo sforzo ne vale la pena. Avere fiducia nella capacità della ragione umana di apprendere la verità tranquillizza ogni apprensione. Certamente, tali sentimenti possono sembrare stranieri in un'epoca segnata da un relativismo e uno scetticismo estremi, ma i modi passano mentre la verità perdura, attendendo il nostro sincero impegno nell'esplorazione.

Il volume è strutturato in un'Introduzione, otto Capitoli e un Epilogo. I Capitoli esplorano: 1-La Scienza di Dio. 2-La Vita di Dio. 3-La Volontà di Dio. 4-L'Amore di Dio. 5-La Giustizia e la Misericordia di Dio. 6-Dio è Provvidenza. 7-Dio è Onnipotente. 8-Dio è Beato.

Note estese, in particolare tratte dalla Somma Teologica e dalla Somma contro i Gentili, dove il Dottore Angelico ha approfondito ampiamente questi temi, accompagnano il testo.
