Il nous vient de l'Inde et est probablement vieux de plus de deux mille ans. Or, l'âme n'est pas un sujet populaire de nos jours. Si son existence n'est pas absolument déniée, elle a depuis longtemps été rangée au nombre des sujets à l'égard desquels c'est folie que d'être sage. Toutefois, si j'avais à réclamer votre attention pour un système philosophique grec ou allemand, si j'avais à vous dire ce que Platon ou Kant ont dit au sujet de l'âme, il serait très possible que leurs opinions puissent tout au moins être considérées comme curieuses. Mais je dois vous dire tout de suite que cela ne me satisferait pas du tout. Je considère ce mot curieux comme un mot paresseux et très répréhensible. Si quelqu'un dit: Oui; cela est très curieux, que veut-il dire ? Ce qu'il veut dire en réalité, c'est: Oui, cela est très curieux, mais pas davantage. Mais pourquoi pas davantage ? Non, parce que cela n'a pas d'importance en soi, mais simplement parce que dans les cases de son esprit, il n'y a pas encore de place prête pour recevoir cette idée, simplement parce que son esprit n'est pas accordé avec elle et ne vibre pas en harmonie, simplement parce qu'il n'a pas pour elle de réelle sympathie. Pour un esprit bien approvisionné et une intelligence bien aménagée il ne devrait rien y avoir de simplement curieux; on a dit avec raison que presque toute grande découverte, tout réel progrès dans la connaissance humaine est dû à ceux qui peuvent découvrir derrière ce qu'il semblait seulement curieux à la foule, quelque chose de réellement important et gros de résultats. L'étincelle électrique de l'éclair est curieuse depuis que le monde existe, ce n'est que depuis hier, pour ainsi dire, qu'elle est devenue réellement importante.
