About the Book

Simplification of prosthetic hand engineering is crucial for many interests and readers, with the increased numbers of handicapped individuals overall the world. An introduction to the basic engineering concepts of designing, prototyping, and assembling of a prosthetic hand can be available for everyone in demand to this technology, which becomes more affordable and cheaper by using of 3D printing and 3D CAD modeling techniques. We hope from writing this book to shape another solution for many people with disabilities in need for such technology.

What This Book Provides
This book gives an insight to the fundamentals, basic concept, and engineering principles of the prosthetic hand systems. It provides the most important topics needed to understand from scratch what the prosthetic hand system is and how to build such biomechanical unit in a professional manner. As intended illustrative approach, this book provides 140 descriptive figures and block diagrams.

What This Book Covers
This book covers the signal processing section for the EMG (Electromyography) signal and how to improve the functionalities of the prosthetic unit from the kinematic and the prehension point of view. Moreover, the last chapters of the book highlight the haptics sensors and interfaces that are used in the prosthetic hand designing and implementation, CAD/CAM, CNC, and 3D printing aspects are also discussed.

To Whom This Book Directed
Generally, the materials enclosed in this book will be a righteous guide to undergraduate students in biomedical engineering and biomechatronics field of study, as well as to biomechanical and rehabilitation engineering specialists.
About the Author:
Abbas AlZubaidi was born in Baghdad, Iraq, in 1979. He gained his B.Sc. in Medical Engineering and M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering (BME) from Al-Nahrain University, in 2001 and 2004, respectively. In 2015, he awarded Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from RWTH Aachen University, Germany.

He was continued in the research field of biomedical engineering and focused on the biosignals/physiological processing and control. His research interests are in prosthetic limb designing and controlling strategies. And, he contributed to the research efforts on the medical infrared thermal imaging and other related applications in the neonatal medicine.

He published more than 37 papers, conference papers, a book and a book chapter in the field of biomedical signal and image processing, artificial prosthetic controlling and simulation, and thermography imaging. Currently, he is working as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, for biomedical imaging applications in Space. And, He is an academic and a scientific consultant and a lecturer at Department of Biomedical Engineering in Al Mustaqbal University College AMUC in Babel, Iraq.

Ali Al-Bayaty was born in Baghdad, Iraq, in 1981. He gained his B.Sc. in Computer Engineering and M.Sc. in Computer Engineering from Al-Nahrain University, in 2002 and 2005, respectively. He awarded the Fulbright Masters Scholarship to do his Graduate Certificate in Computer Programming and the M.S. in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) from the University of New Haven, Connecticut, USA in 2012 and 2014, respectively.

His research interests are focused on the computer vision techniques for biomedical engineering and robotic applications, and also on the Internet of Things (IoT) for robotics programming and localization through the SaaS approaches. He continued in the research field of computer engineering and focused on the mechatronics engineering and applications, computer vision and digital image processing, game engine, and visual programming language (VPL) for robotics.

He is currently working as an IT Coordinator at IRIS (Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services), a federally recognized refugee resettlement agency in New Haven, Connecticut.
