About the Book

Review"As a textbook, it provides a solid foundation for probability and statistics with introduction to some useful applied topics."-Roger M. Sauter, Boeing Commercial Airplane Group, in TECHNOMETRICS, VOL. 47, 2005"...an excellent introduction to classical Probability Theory and Statistics. The explanations are absolutely clear [with] well chosen examples...I simply love it."- Gabor Szekely, Bowling Green State University"...numerous homework problems at varying levels of difficulty...do an excellent job of testing the students' grasp of the material..."- Charles Dunkl, University of Virginia Book DescriptionThis updated classic provides a superior introduction to applied probability and statistics for engineering or science majors. Author Sheldon Ross shows how probability yields insight into statistical problems, resulting in an intuitive understanding of the statistical procedures most often used by practicing engineers and scientists. Real data sets are incorporated in a wide variety of exercises and examples, and the enclosed CD-ROM includes software that automates the required computations. The Third Edition includes new exercises, examples, and applications, updated statistical material, and more.New in this edition:* New exercises and data examples including:- The One-sided Chebyshev Inequality for Data- The Logistics Distribution and Logistic Regression- Estimation and Testing in proofreader problems- Product Form Estimates of Life Distributions- Observational Studies* Updated statistical material* New, contemporary applicationsHallmark features:* Reflects Sheldon Ross's masterfully clear exposition* Contains numerous examples, exercises, and homework problems* Unique, easy-to-use software automates required computations* Applies probability theory to everyday statistical problems and situations* Careful development of probability, modeling, and statistical procedures leads to intuitive understanding* Instructor's Solutions Manual is available to adopters Book InfoEmphasizes the manner in which probability yields insight into statistical problems. Augments key statistical techniques with a firm grounding in probability. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. The publisher, John Wiley & SonsReviews fundamental concepts and applications of probability and statistics. After a general overview, it considers special types of random variables, using examples which illustrate their wide variety of applications. Also examines their calculation and presents computer programs that calculate the probability distribution, and the inverses of binomial, poisson, normal, t, F, and Chi-square distributions. Coverage includes such topics as the sample mean, sample variance, sample median, as well as histograms, empirical distribution functions, and stem-and-leaf plots. A program for computing sample mean and sample variance for a given data set is included. A diskette of 35 programs for the IBM PC is available, giving exact answers or approximations where appropriate. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From the Back CoverThe Second Edition of Introduction to Probability and Statistics for Engineers and Scientists emphasizes the manner in which probability yields insight into statistical problems. The book augments key statistical results in an intuitive understanding of statistical procedures most often used by practicing engineers and scientists.Early coverage of descriptive statistics immerses the reader in the data approach. Real data sets are incorporated in a wide variety of exercises and examples throughout the text. The emphasis on data motivates the probability coverage. Coverage of Quality Control is also expanded in this edition. As in the previous edition, carefully developed coverage of probability motivates probabilistic models of real phenomena and the statistical procedures that follow.New to the Second Edition:* Real-data examples and exercises throughout the text* Expanded coverage of Quality Control material* Unique software to automate the computations required for the exercisesSheldon M. Ross has published numerous textbooks and technical articles in the areas of statistics and applied probability. Professor Ross is the founding and continuing editor of the journal Probability in the Engineering and Informational Sciences, published by Cambridge University Press. He is a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and a recipient of the Humboldt U.S. Senior Scientist award. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. About the AuthorSheldon M. Ross is a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at the University of Southern California. He received his Ph.D. in statistics at Stanford University in 1968. He has published many technical articles and textbooks in the areas of statistics and applied probability. Among his texts are A First Course in Probability, Introduction to Probability Models, Stochastic Processes, and Introductory Statistics. Professor Ross is the founding and continuing editor of the journal Probability in the Engineering and Informational Sciences. A Thrilling But Totally Believable Murder Mystery

Read this in one evening. I had planned to do other things with my day, but it was impossible to put down. Every time I tried, I was drawn back to it in less than 5 minutes. I sobbed my eyes out the entire last 100 pages. Highly recommend!
