El uso del método de elementos finitos para resolver problemas de borde y realizar simulación de fenómenos físicos en ingeniería, cada vez se hace más popular. Sin embargo, la gran mayoría de la buena bibliografía se encuentra escrita en lengua inglesa, siendo Miguel Ruiz y Eugenio Ibáñez los pioneros en presentar una bibliografía muy completa en lengua española; al traducir el texto de Zienkiewicz y Taylor, "Finite Element Method". Por ésta razón me he motivado en escribir un texto en lengua española con la finalidad de contribuir a la difusión y desarrollo del método de los elementos finitos (MEF) en los estudiantes e investigadores de habla hispana.El texto trata en forma general el MEF, sin profundizar en forma excesiva en las complejidades matemáticas. La matemática utilizada puede ser comprendida por ingenieros o personas que tengan conocimientos en álgebra matricial, calculo integral y diferencial, ecuaciones diferenciales y métodos numéricos. Para la programación del método se ha utilizado el lenguaje Fortran por ser el que se ha implementado en forma tradicional.En éste documento se recoge aproximadamente quince (15) años de experiencia como programador de rutinas numéricas para resolver problemas particulares con el métodos de los elementos finitos y usando softwares comerciales, tales como: Ansys, Nastran, Workbench y otros códigos libres.El texto se estructura en seis (6) capítulos, donde el capítulo 1 presenta una nota histórica del método, describe la forma como éste método se aplica al análisis de estructura, y culmina con una descripción de los conceptos matemáticos y ecuaciones que se requieren para entender correctamente el MEF. El capítulo 2 contiene los aspectos matemáticos del MEF, e inicia con la presentación de los métodos de aproximación utilizados para obtener las ecuaciones del sistema, se describe con bastante detalle la forma de llegar a la formulación variacional de los problemas de borde hasta llegar a formular el problema mediante la aproximación de Galerkin.El capítulo 3 contiene una descripción del procedimiento que se debe seguir para resolver un problema de borde usando el MEF, presenta la forma de estimar el error de aproximación del método, muestra los procedimientos que se deben seguir para obtener las funciones base y funciones de forma de los elementos, y los tipos de funciones de formas que normalmente se usan. También se describen las transformaciones matemáticas necesarias para poder integral las ecuaciones de los elementos en un sistema de coordenadas local y los métodos numéricos de integración más utilizados.El capítulo 4 presenta el análisis de un problema de borde unidimensional utilizando el MEF. El capítulo inicia describiendo la formulación fuerte del problema, seguido de la formulación variacional y aproximación de Galerkin. Seguidamente se presenta el procedimiento para realizar la aproximación del problema por elementos finitos, se describen los métodos de solución de los sistemas de ecuaciones y finalmente se presenta y describe un código computacional en lenguaje fortran utilizado para resolver el problema de borde unidimensional formulado.En el capítulo 5 es similar al capítulo 4, con la diferencia que se describe el procedimiento para resolver un problema de borde bidimensional utilizando el método de los elementos finitos, dejando al lector la realización del código computacional para resolver la ecuación diferencial bidimensional.Finalmente, en el capítulo 6 se presenta los aspectos generales para resolver algunos problemas avanzados de la ingeniería utilizando el método de los elementos finitos, como son: los problemas tridimensionales, los sistemas de ecuaciones diferenciales, las ecuaciones diferenciales no lineales y los problemas transitorios.
