La creación representa el pináculo de la obra divina. Solo Dios es capaz de crear, expresando así al máximo el atributo de Su omnipotencia. En este sentido, Santo Tomás de Aquino se distingue claramente de Aristóteles y se acerca más a Platón, bajo la influencia de San Agustín.

Esta distinción proporciona sólidos motivos para refutar a aquellos que afirman: "Santo Tomás se limitó a la Teología, mientras que la contemplación filosófica perteneció exclusivamente al Estagirita." Tal aserto corresponde esencialmente a la hipótesis según la cual, Santo Tomás fue un mero repetidor de Aristóteles, estéril en el desarrollo de sus propias reflexiones filosóficas. Ya hemos refutado esta idea examinando la doctrina tomista del ser (esse), así como su preferencia por la participación del ser en los entes.

Extendemos ahora este análisis a su enseñanza de la creatio ex nihilo. Santo Tomás explora la Teología natural, que encarna el culmen de la Metafísica, y delimita claramente su campo en relación con la Teología revelada. Sus proposiciones están respaldadas por argumentos generosos, tanto en términos de contenido como de cantidad, como lo evidencia la lectura de la Summa contra Gentiles.

Para comprender plenamente la importancia de esto, es indispensable sumergirse en el pensamiento griego, en el pensamiento filosófico-bíblico judeo-cristiano, así como en el surgimiento de la Escolástica. De este modo, se nos revelarán los fundamentos del pensamiento tomista y sus contribuciones originales.

Este volumen consta de once Capítulos, estructurados de la siguiente manera: 1- El concepto de creación. 2- La creación en Platón. 3- La creación en Aristóteles. 4- La creación en Filón de Alejandría. 5- La creación en Plotino. 6- La creación en San Agustín. 7- La creación en Pseudo-Dionisio Areopagita. 8- La creación en Escoto Eriúgena. 9- La creación en Santo Tomás (1). 10- La creación en Santo Tomás (2): Summa contra los Gentiles. 11- Comparación con otros autores.

Finalmente, completan este trabajo un Epílogo, bajo la forma de preguntas y respuestas, y numerosas Notas.

El concepto de creación divina merece especial atención en nuestro mundo contemporáneo, especialmente ante las tentaciones de doctrinas seductoras y extremas, con las cuales la humanidad se autoproclama Dios y, consecuentemente, creadora de su propia existencia.
