Kommunikation ist der generelle Erfolgsfaktor. Der Zusammenhalt moderner Gesellschaften basiert auf der Kommunikation und den zur Verfügung stehenden Medien. Die Nachfrage nach Kommunikation ist "geradezu unersättlich [...], Tendenz: zukünftig noch stärker steigend". In Organisationen und Unternehmen werden Daten heute hauptsächlich elektronisch verarbeitet. Die E-Mail ist das geeignete Kommunikationsmedium, um auch den Austausch von Informationen elektronisch erfolgen zu lassen. Die Kommunikation wird jedoch durch die Nutzung der neuen Kommunikationsmedien beeinflusst, da sie filtern, was an ausgesprochenen und unausgesprochenen Informationen transportiert wird. Sachinformationen können in einzelnen Zeichen, d. h. in Worten und damit auch in Schrift, ausgedrückt werden; lassen sich also durch viele Medien gut übermitteln. Andere Botschaften sind jedoch oftmals auch auf Gesten, Tonlage, Körperhaltung, also auf nonverbale Kommunikation angewiesen. Viele Medien transportieren diese aber nur eingeschränkt oder gar nicht. Sind jedoch die Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter in den Unternehmen und der Öffentlichen Verwaltung entsprechend geschult? Wissen die Mitarbeiter von der Reduzierung der kommunikativen Vielfalt, die ihnen bei einer Face-to-face-Kommunikation zur Verfügung stehen, bei den neuen Kommunikationsmedien?
