Betrachtet man die Ziele und Ansprüche Sozialer Arbeit, wie z.B. zu sozialer Gerechtigkeit beizutragen, einen Beitrag zur Bewältigung sozialer Problemlagen zu leisten sowie Teilhabe und Partizipation von AdressatInnen zu erweitern wird deutlich, dass es für die Profession dringend erforderlich ist, solche gesellschaftlichen Differenzlinien und Machtverhältnisse zu fokussieren. Vor allem auch, weil in der Sozialen Arbeit Menschen im Kontext vereinheitlichender Konstruktionen als Zugehörige von Gruppen wahrgenommen und unterschieden werden. Dabei besteht die Gefahr in und durch Soziale Arbeit gesellschaftliche Zuschreibungen, Ungleichheiten und Normalitätszwänge aufrechtzuerhalten. So machte Beginn der 1990er Jahre Neil Thompson in einer Buchreihe, die sich auf die Ausbildung von Professionellen Sozialer Arbeit fokussiert hat, darauf aufmerksam, "dass die kritische Thematisierung und Auseinandersetzung mit sozialen Einteilungen, Zuschreibungsmustern und, Platzanweisernʻ im Kontext von class, gender, race/ethnicity, age und disability zu den Kernaufgaben Sozialer Arbeit gehört". Dies stellt allerdings eine besondere Herausforderung dar, zumal soziale Differenzen sowie Ungleichheits- und Machtverhältnisse einen sehr komplexen Sachverhalt darstellen. Der Ansatz der Intersektionalität scheint dafür ein Instrumentarium zu bieten. Es handelt sich dabei um ein Konzept mit dessen Hilfe versucht wird, Überschneidungen zwischen sozialen Konstruktionen und Kategorien in den Blick zu bekommen.
