Nicht nur die unzähligen Möglichkeiten für die Geschäftswelt, sondern auch jene im privaten Bereich, und hier die Sparte des "Social Networking", macht die globale Vernetzung für beinahe jeden attraktiv. Web 2.0 ist das Schlagwort der Stunde. Seit einigen Jahren geistert es verstärkt durch die Medien. Erstmals geprägt wurde der Begriff des Web 2.0 im Jahr 2004 vom O'Reilly-Verlag. Eine ausgeformte Definition wurde jedoch nicht geliefert. Bis heute ist Web 2.0 vielen Anwendern zwar ein Begriff, wissen aber meist nicht viel damit anzufangen. Und dies wird sich höchstwahrscheinlich auch nicht gravierend ändernd, da die Entwicklungen zu schnell voranschreiten, um den Erklärungsbedarf der uner-fahrenen User decken zu können. Probleme bereitet den Social Networks auch ihre eigene Unüberschaubarkeit - nicht nur des eigentlichen Zweckes wegen werden die Seiten genutzt, vielfach wird eine Social Networking Seite als Möglichkeit für kriminelle Handlungen gesehen. Eine exzessive Nutzung des WWW kann in die Abhängigkeit, bis zur Selbstzerstörung führen. "Internet Addiction" wurde vom New Yorker Psychiater Ivan Goldberg im Scherz eingeführt. Der Begriff wurde zu einer Art Selbstläufer als die renommierte New York Times im Februar 1995 einen Artikel zu den Gefahren der Internetsucht veröffentlichte.
