Sein Name wird 21 Jahre später um die Welt gehen, und auf seinen Kopf eine Prämie von mindestens 50 Millionen US-Dollar ausgesetzt sein - Osama Bin Laden. Als Sohn eines erfolgreichen Geschäftsmannes mit guten Verbindungen ins saudische Königshaus, Scheich Mohammed Bin Ud Bin Laden, besaß Osama die besten Aufstiegschancen in Saudi-Arabien. Doch es kommt anders: Er wendet sich dem fundamentalistischen Islam zu und gründet das Terrornetzwerk al-Qaida. Bin Laden und die Qaida werden für den Tod Tausender unschuldiger Zivilisten verantwortlich gemacht. Es stellt sich die Frage nach den Beweggründen: Warum hassen sie uns? Warum tun sie das? Warum sind sie bereit zu sterben und dabei möglichst viele Menschen zu ermorden? Im Folgenden wird zunächst ein kurzer Überblick über die verschiedenen Arten des Terrorismus, sowie die Methoden, Motive und Ziele gegeben (2.). Dabei wird herausgearbeitet, was den internationalen von anderen Formen des Terrorismus unterscheidet. Anschließend wird der Blick auf das Netzwerk der Qaida gerichtet, und ihre Entstehungsgeschichte sowie ihre Struktur beleuchtet (3.). Im 4. Teil sollen die Beweggründe, also die eben gestellte Frage- warum tun sie das- dargestellt werden. Im darauf folgenden Fazit wird ein Überblick über die Bekämpfungsansätze gegeben, dabei wird auch auf Ideen eingegangen, die in der politischen Diskussion eine untergeordnete Rolle spielen.
