Das Ziel der Arbeit ist es, die Relevanz des intergenerationellen Lernens zu unterstreichen. Aufgrund der bislang nicht sehr tiefgehenden Forschung auf diesem Gebiet hat das Thema noch nicht so sehr an Popularität gewonnen. Um die Möglichkeiten dieser Art zu Lernen in Zukunft voll ausschöpfen zu können, muss das Thema differenziert erforscht und dargestellt werden. Diese Arbeit soll einen Beitrag dazu leisten, das intergenerationelle Lernen als Bildungspotenzial für sämtliche Generationen zu sehen. Während die jüngeren Menschen unserer Gesellschaft immer schneller, immer mehr und vor allem alles Neue lernen müssen, scheint das Wissen der älteren Generation mit ihrem Ausscheiden aus dem Berufs- und Bildungsleben verloren zu gehen. Doch häufig ist genau deren Erfahrungswissen notwendig und enorm wertvoll, um die immer komplexeren und weniger detailliert planbareren Aufgaben und Anforderungen im (Arbeits-)Leben bearbeiten zu können. Um dem Verlust des wertvollen Wissens der Älteren also vorzubeugen, ist ein bewusster Austausch zwischen den Generationen unabdingbar. Nun wäre es kein Austausch, kein Dialog, wenn es nicht einen Vorteil für beide Seiten bringen würde. Während die Jüngeren aus dem Erfahrungswissen der Älteren Nutzen ziehen, können sie gleichzeitig ihr modernes, fortschrittlicheres Wissen an die Älteren weitergeben. Diese profitieren insofern, als dass sie in einer immer älter werdenden Gesellschaft, in einer Berufswelt, in der bis ins hohe Alter gearbeitet werden muss, mithalten können. Das technologische Wissen, die Medienkompetenz, das interkulturelle und internationale Denken der jungen Menschen hilft den älteren Menschen, wettbewerbsfähig zu bleiben und somit ihre Existenz zu sichern.
