Das Problem der Auswahl einer geeigneten Softwarelosung fur einen bestimmten Anwendungsbereich wird in der Literatur in der Regel praskriptiv behandelt, d. h. es wird untersucht, wie man am besten vorgehen sollte, um zu einem guten Ergebnis zu kommen. Vereinzelte deskriptive Forschungsarbeiten befassen sich mit der Frage, was passieren wurde, wenn sich Individuen auf eine bestimmte Art und Weise verhielten. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt die vorliegende Untersuchung den ersten Versuch dar, zu beschreiben und zu erklaren, wie sich Individuen bei der Auswahl von "kleinen" Softwaresystemen tatsachlich verhalten (im Gegensatz dazu, wie sie sich idealerweise verhalten sollten) und aus welchen Grunden sie sich fur ein bestimmtes Programm entscheiden. Deshalb wurde ein explorativer Ansatz gewahlt, um einen ersten Zugang zu dem zu untersuchenden Sachverhalt zu erarbeiten. Zwanzig Individuen mit unterschiedlicher Erfahrung hinsichtlich des Umgangs mit einschlagiger Software erhielten die Aufgabe, drei Programme zum Zeichnen von Flussdiagrammen auszuprobieren und eines davon fur die Bearbeitung eines fiktiven Problems auszuwahlen. Sie wurden angewiesen, wahrenddessen laut zu denken, um so Zugang zu den begleitenden Kognitionen zu ermoglichen. Die resultierenden Verbalisierungen wurden zusammen mit den parallel dazu ablaufenden Interaktionen mit der Software als Video aufgezeichnet und in Interaktionprotokollen formalisiert. Auf Basis dieser Protokolle konnten vier Evaluationstypen unterschieden werden: Aufgabenorientierte, die die Losbarkeit der anstehenden Aufgabe absichern; Minimalisten, die im Streben nach Aufwandsminimierung nur oberflachlich testen; Verspielte, die viel ausprobieren und Wert auf individuelle Gestaltungsmoglichkeiten legen; Unsichere, die uberfordert wirken und nur schwer Zugang zur korrekten Benutzung der Software finden. Die Typologie kann durch existierende psychologische Modelle erklart und als moderierendes Konstrukt in das Technology Acceptance Model von Davis et al. integriert werden. Ergebnis einer Analyse der Auswahlgrunde ist ein im Wesentlichen hierarchisch strukturiertes Hypothesensystem, demzufolge die interaktive Ad-hoc-Evaluation und -Auswahl von Software nach dem Prinzip einer lexikografischen Ordnung erfolgt. Als wichtigstes Entscheidungskriterium wird postuliert, dass es gelingen muss, die Funktionsweise der benotigten Funktionalitaten in wiederholbarer Weise zu erschliessen. Nur, wenn dies fur mehrere Optionen erfullt ist, werden als nachste Kriterien die Ergebnisqualitat und die Handhabbarkeit (in dieser Reihenfolge) relevant. Untereinander gleichwertig folgen schliesslich Optik, Zusatznutzen sowie Sicherheit vermittelnde "weiche" Faktoren (z. B. Vertrautheit). Auch dieses Hypothesensystem findet im Technology Acceptance Model einen theoretischen Rahmen.
