The concepts of emotional intelligence and emotional competence are integrated
with each other and are widely used in workplace settings where their meanings are
directed and related with the growth, development, learning and performance of the
employees. Emotional competence, though a widely studied concept in the field of
organizational behaviour, is an enigmatic construct as many questions related to it still
remain unanswered. One such question that has been notified in scientific literature and
management writings in last few years is the interface of emotional competence of a
person with the level of work engagement. The construct of work engagement is gaining
popularity in the field of Industrial/Organizational psychology. Focusing on the positive
behaviours at workplace, organizations are now realizing the need of studying the
construct of work engagement as a concept vital to the field of occupational health
psychology. Many researches have been conducted in the past two decades to understand
how to engage employees at the workplace. This research was an endeavor to inquire the
linkages between the two constructs- emotional competence and work engagement-
which are considered pivotal to organizational success. Further, the possibility of
