Et ces materiaux, lorsquils sont puises dans limmense forge que sont les technologies, et specifiquement les biotechnologies, les neurotechnologies, les nanotechnologies et lintelligence artificielle, tous les elements sont reunis pour faire en sorte que lon puisse se raconter une histoire a propos du futur de notre civilisation et de lespece humaine. Dans cet ouvrage, le sociologue Pierre Fraser, enseignant-chercheur a lUniversite Laval et a lUniversite de Moncton (campus dEdmundston), nous fait la demonstration que les mythes technoscientifiques sont de puissants catalyseurs des idees proposees par les geants de la Silicon Valley. Il nous explique egalement pourquoi les mythes technoscientifiques fonctionnent, pourquoi ils arrivent a expliquer, a seduire, a justifier, a mobiliser et a evoluer. Pour y parvenir, les mythes technoscientifiques mettent en oeuvre trois mecanismes: la prediction, ladhesion et laveuglement selectif, ou laveuglement selectif fait appel a quatre autres mecanismes dune tres grande efficacite lautoverification, la suppression de la verification, lautomythification et loccultation. Afin dexpliquer ce en quoi consiste un mythe technoscientfique, lauteur utilise comme exemple le courant transhumaniste. En fait, pour le transhumanisme, la mort nest pas un horizon indepassable, car il serait possible de loutrepasser ou den ralentir dautant sa survenue en ralentissant de facon importante le vieillissement. Ainsi, la mort nest plus du tout consideree comme un probleme dordre philosophique, spirituel ou meme religieux, mais bien comme un probleme dingenieur. Autrement dit, il suffirait tout simplement de reparer ce qui fonctionne mal et ce qui est defectueux. Ce que cherche finalement a faire le transhumanisme, cest de transferer le processus evolutif depuis la nature vers une minorite agissante, celle des ingenieurs, plus specifiquement, ceux quil est possible de regrouper sous le vocable de Guilde des ingenieurs de la vie.

Pierre Fraser est detenteur dun doctorat en sociologie de lUniversite Laval. Il est egalement detenteur dun baccalaureat en linguistique et dune maitrise en linguistique computationnelle, ce qui a fait de lui un informaticien qui a transpose plusieurs techniques linguistiques danalyse du discours dans des systemes dintelligence artificielle entre 1995 et 2000 pour le compte de la societe nStein Technologies. Sa formation doctorale en sociologie est venue completer le debut de sa comprehension de ce qui attend nos societes au cours des annees a venir en matiere de technologies intelligentes.
