Mit dem Übergang ins neue Jahrtausend und der Digitalisierung der (Film-) Technik erlebte das dokumentarische Genre weltweit einen überraschenden Aufschwung. Im Fernsehen ist seitdem ein "Dokuboom" zu verzeichnen, vor allem aber dem Kino bescherte diese Entwicklung einen nie da gewesenen Zuwachs an abendfüllenden Dokumentarfilmen. Dabei entbehrt es nicht einer gewissen Ironie, dass der Dokumentarfilm ausgerechnet vor dem Hintergrund digital manipulierbarer Bilder eine Renaissance erfährt. Tatsächlich aber tritt die Diskussion um den Wahrheitsgehalt der Bilder in eine neue Ära: Neben der Glaubwürdigkeit auf der einen Seite stellt sich zunehmend die Frage nach der Machart von Dokumentarfilmen. Die zentrale Fragestellung lautet demnach nicht mehr, ob sie inszenieren dürfen, sondern zielt vielmehr auf das Wie dieser Inszenierung. Welche Inszenierungsstrategien verfolgen heutige Dokumentarfilme? Und wie erreichen sie dabei ein großes Publikum? Diesen Fragen geht Anja-Magali Bitter in ihrer Studie nach und konzentriert sich dabei auf das Ursprungsland des Dokumentarfilms und Kinos überhaupt: Frankreich. In einem ersten Teil liefert sie einen historischen Abriss des französischsprachigen Dokumentarfilms von seinen Anfängen bis heute. Der zweite Teil widmet sich dem internationalen Stand der Dokumentarfilmtheorie. Darauf aufbauend erfolgt im dritten Teil eine Analyse der Filme Sein und Haben (2002) von Nicolas Philibert, Die Sammler und die Sammlerin (2000) von Agnès Varda und La vie de Mimi (2002) von Claire Simon. Im französischen Kino erfolgreich gelaufen, illustrieren diese drei sehr unterschiedlichen Dokumentarfilme besonders anschaulich mögliche Inszenierungsstrategien des neueren nichtfiktionalen Films.
