Excerpt from The Insurance Register, 1887: Containing, With Other Information, a Record of the Yearly Progress and the Present Financial Position of British Insurance Associations

The Insurance Year recently closed may be regarded, all round, as one of fairly average progress.

In the Life Department - to which the 'pages of the insurance register are principally devoted - the disastrous failure of the Briton Medical and General is, unfortunately, the chief feature of interest. T 0 those immediately interested as policy-holders, the collapse must of course entail pecuniary loss, and in certain quarters, and to a limited extent, the failure may, for the moment, create doubt and disquiet as to the solvency of Life Associations; but, happily, the procedure of British Life Offices generally has now become so extensively known and appreciated, and, consequently, the public mind has been so far educated as quickly to discern the essential difference between the conduct of those Offices and that of the bankrupt Company, that any Cloud that may arise will quickly be dispersed, and the Life Assurance atmosphere become clearer than heretofore. Indeed, the removal of the Briton Medical from the list of going Com panics, gives to the remark made in last year's register greater emphasis than ever - that the number of thoroughly sound Institutions to any that may be considered doubtful is proportionately far greater than at any previous period in the history of Life Insurance.

Consequent upon the demise Of the Briton Medical - which in former days had absorbed twelve other Companies - it is deemed desirable to reprint a list of defunct Life Offices which had an existence of three years and upwards, and a list therefore of extinct Companies, giving date of formation and extinction, with the name of the absorbing Company, will be found at page 2 5.

The Valuation Abstract has received considerable revision, and, it is hoped, improvement.
