Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage, ob es eine Marktstruktur gibt, in der der technische Fortschritt über Innovation optimal vorangetrieben und verwirklicht werden kann, und wie diese Innovationen ihrerseits auf die Marktstruktur zurückwirken. Nach Schumpeter unterliegt die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung einem ständigen Änderungsprozess, einem "Prozess des schöpferischen Zerstörens" welcher begleitet ist von einem, der "...unaufhörlich die alte Struktur zerstört und unaufhörlich eine neue schafft". Eine der Grundvoraussetzung dafür ist eine gewisse monopolistische Marktmacht der Unternehmen und, dass diese sich aus dieser Macht heraus mit Hilfe von Innovationen weitere Gewinne versprechen. (Schumperter-Hypothese) Ihm zufolge lässt sich der technische Fortschritt am besten durch ein monopolistisches Grossunternehmen durchsetzen. Bereits 1911 wies er in seiner "Theorie der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung" auf die bedeutende Rolle der Unternehmensinnovationen auf den Wohlstand einer Gesellschaft hin. Er definierte Innovationen hierin als "Durchsetzung neuer Kombinationen". Kurtz deutete dies als die "Durchsetzung einer neuen Kombination von Produktionsfaktoren am Markt", Kombinationen, die demnach keinen kommerziellen Erfolg erzielen können, sind keine echten Innovationen.
