Die Forschungsfrage wird durch eine empirische Exploration in zwei Schritten mittels einer Expertenbefragung beantwortet. Im ersten Schritt wird dabei versucht, ein umfassendes Verständnis für Base of the Pyramid-Märkte und die darin vorherrschenden Marktbedingungen zu generieren. Den zweiten Schritt bildet der Transfer der Erkenntnisse in Top of the Pyramid-Märkte. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass Base of the Pyramid-Märkte interessante Impulse für Geschäftsmodellinnovationen vor allem im Hinblick auf einen geringen Ressourcenverbrauch und niedrigen Kapitalaufwand bieten können. "Die innovative Kraft des Mangels" - der Titel dieser Arbeit wurde inspiriert durch die Ausgangsüberlegung, dass Armutsmärkte eine gewisse Vorbildfunktion für einkommensstarke Märkte bezüglich der Gestaltung von innovativen Geschäftsmodellen einnehmen könnten, da dort mit einem allgegenwärtigen Mangel an Ressourcen und Kapital umgegangen werden muss. Diese Fragestellung wurde auch teilweise in der Einleitung durch das Aufzeigen eines zunehmenden direkten Handlungsdrucks auf die Unternehmen westlicher Industriestaaten begründet. Allerdings gibt es in den Ländern mit hohem Einkommen derzeit keinen beobachtbaren signifikanten Mangel an Ressourcen, Kapital, Nahrung oder Infrastruktur.
