José Viana observa a los milicianos, no usan armadura, arnés o casco, ni arcabuz, casi todos descalzos, solo usan pantalones cortos de algodón, en su mayoría pieles marrones, algunos negros, frente a cada pelotón un capitán de la milicia, estos, tienen botas y armado, con una espada y un trabuco, pregunta: - ¿Ya están entrenados para el combate?- ¿Entrenado ?, para milicianos, "El mejor bautismo é el de sangre". El general José de Andonaegui responde con certeza que sus bugres cruzados eran mejores guerreros que los bugres nativos, por el simple hecho de haber sido entrenado por él... El coimeiro mira al jefe Ñhenguirú ya no está en el extremo opuesto de la cancha, cruza la calle caminando con calma, paseando, casi bailando, va al cabildo, sonríe, parpadea a Panamussupanema, que miraba desde el interior del cabildo el juego de su marido, incluso feliz, golpea con una mirada, como una ibirapema, rompiéndose huesos, acompañado de una voz Irritada y melodiosa... Karaí Djekupé permanece inmóvil, escuchando gemidos que se extienden hasta la noche, por un momento cesan, luego otro grito, y momentos más largos de gemidos de agonía, sinfonía interminable, el jefe de guerra Tupi-guaraní trata de escuchar otros sonidos, grillos, ranas, búhos, nada, solo gemidos bajo la lluvia. Oye la voz de KapãnoJapo, a su lado, habla en Kaingângue burlándose de los gemidos de los blandengues: - Fi vækrær tóg mæ há tî. (Puedes escuchar su llanto en la distancia)...De Andonaegui disputa a su antiguo alumno: - Ya somos inmortales, querido Miguel Tinajero, en cuanto a los actos que nos inmortalizaron, depende de cómo lo describirá el ignorable que sostiene la pluma. Miguel sonríe, con la definición general de inmortalidad, pregunta: - ¿Y cuál de estos inmortales será el general José de Andonaegui?El gobernador sonríe, acaricia el rostro barbudo del ex alumno, mira nuevamente hacia el Mediterráneo, piensa por unos momentos, tratando de recordar todo lo que hizo en sus más de setenta años de vida, sonríe, llega a una conclusión: - ¡Seré todos ellos! No seré ninguno de ellos...Mîgkrîrý mira hacia la entrada de la tava, sus ojos contemplan el horror, en forma de una masa guerrera Kaingângue, compuesta por decenas de cientos de botocudos enemigos, al frente, el botocudo más feroz que conoció, descrito por el nombre, KapãnoJapo, Palo do Diablo, Mîgkrîrý mira al opuesto Põ'í-Bang, com kapãno listo, corriendo delante de sus guerreros, es el ceño fruncido del diablo, de la muerte, el kaingângue atraviesa por uno de los aimorés, antes de que él describa una reacción, el kapãno, de Japo, le rompe la cara...La hoguera encendida bajo un tapir de los aimorés, debido a la lluvia, que avanza hacia la noche, por la hoguera, KapãnoJapo aviva el fuego, toma una brocheta, hecha de madera de hierro, donde se pega un pedazo de carne, un trozo de brazo humano, del rey botocudo mira la carne, parece estar bien asado, muerde encima del bíceps, se arranca un trozo, mastica, mientras prueba el asado, un sabor amargo le lleg
