Um dieses Thema zu beleuchten, wird Ulrich Beck und seine Individualisierungsthese sowie seine Feststellungen über die Risikogesellschaft betrachtet. Im Fokus steht die Fragestellung: Welche Herausforderungen ergeben sich im Zuge der Individualisierung für Eltern und wie gehen sie damit um? Die moderne Gesellschaft scheint unbegrenzte Möglichkeiten und Freiheiten zu bieten. Vieles, was in traditionellen Gesellschaften undenkbar war, ist heutzutage möglich. Die Akzeptanz gegenüber verschiedensten Lebensformen ist gestiegen und der Einheitsgedanke verblasst. All dies klingt durchweg positiv, doch diese gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen haben auch Schattenseiten. Wer die Wahl hat, hat die Qual. Die Individuen stehen immer wieder vor der Herausforderung, Entscheidungen zu treffen, ohne zu wissen, welche Folgen sich daraus ergeben. Unter dem Begriff der Individualisierung versteht Ulrich Beck eine Vielzahl an Entwicklungen und Erfahrungen der Gesellschaft. Damit ist einerseits die Auflösung vorgegebener Lebensformen und andererseits die, auf den Einzelnen zukommenden, neuen institutionellen Anforderungen, Kontrollen und Zwänge gemeint. Diese entstehen aus den Anforderungen, Reglungen und Maßgaben des Arbeitsmarktes, des Wohlfahrtsstaates und der Bürokratie. All diese sind individuelle Vorgaben mit besonderem Aufforderungscharakter, ein eigenes Leben zu führen. Die moderne Gesellschaft ist daher kein Ort mit unbegrenzten Freiheiten, sondern in der Summe der Anforderungen ein höchst differenziertes Kunstwerk mit labyrinthischen Anlagen.
