About the Book

Globally, growing market for food and beverages has been propolling the organic commodity market. What in the 1990's was niche; today is main stream. The Foods Magazine quotes that demand for organic foods are growing five times faster than that of conventional foods in supermakets and branded stores 9growth over 500%). In developed countries, rate of growth for organic foods is 8-20% per annum, attracting the interest of a large number of farmers, food processing firms, retailers and government. Along wiht fair trade goods, organics has become one of the fastest growing sectors of the global food market.
It is estimated that international trade for organic foods could reach US $ 100 billion in the foreseable future. The potential for the Indian organic market is huge as local demand is also growing. In India, agriculture is still contributing 24% of GDP, 13.1% fo the total exports, employing 58.4% of country's workforce and providing livelihood security to more than 650 million people. And with large tracts of land very conducive to organic farming in India, the potential is promising. A recent market study conducted by the ICCOA also reveals that market potential for organic foods in India is actually over 10 times the value of India's exports.
About Author :
Dr. Tej Partap, an Agro-ecologist, is a known internationla expert in mountain agriculture development and organic agriculture. He has been instrumental in inter country exchange of successful development experience. His most notable wokr is on institutional in inter country exchange of successful development experiences. His most notable work is on institutional capacity building of Agriculture Institutions of Tibet Autonomous Region of China, in the areas of policy planning, research, education and extension. In recent years he joined the organic movement. He is the founder member of ICCOA and led it as it Executive Director for two years (2004-2006).
Manoj Kumar Menon, Executive Director of International Competence Centre for Organic Agriculture (ICCOA), previously was head of its Market Development Programmes since August 2004. He was also the Coordinator of both editions of the "India Organic Trade Fairs (2005 and 2006), the flagshipp products of ICCOA. He was the State University topper in his degree in Agriculture from Gujarat Agricultural University. he did his MBA from Faculty of Management Studies, Universty of Delhi. He has over 12 years of experience in management of agricultural projects, estates,input marketing and market development programmes. He has also represented ICCOA internationally the BioFach, IFOAM, FiBL and at various forums in the contry.
