About the Book

Five children of David and Agnes (Hoffmann) Preisch of Offenbach (Landau), in Rheinland Pfalz, Germany, sailed from Rotterdam in the Winter Gallery, arriving in Philadelphia on 5 September 1737. Anna Margaretha, Johan Michael, J. Henry, Augustine, and Daniel Preisch were settled in southwestern Virginia by mid-1700s. Some of them stayed in Virginia, while others moved on to other locations. This volume is a compilation of descendants of these five siblings, whose surname changed to Preisch to Price and who became the progenitors of a great number of Prices throughout the United States.
About the Author: W. Conway Price (1906-1991) was a scientist, researcher, and professor. He received his BS in 1927 from VPI (now Virginia Tech) and his PhD from Columbia in 1932. As a Plant Pathologist and Virologist, he worked at the Rockefeller Institute in Princeton, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Florida, and the Philippines with UN-FAO. He was Editor and Chief of the magazine Phytopathology 1952-54, elected as Fellow in that society in 1970, and acknowledged as "an outstanding teacher and creative researcher" and "considered, by his peers, one of the top plant virologists in the world today." His interest in family research may have been sparked by that of his father, and by the 1940s, his genealogical records were voluminous. Perhaps this was a genetic trait, which he passed to his daughter. In 1980, they began their collaboration, which resulted in Increase in Prices, when he was living in Dallas, Texas, and she in southern California. After this he completed several other genealogical compilations, some of which his daughter has published. Although a technical writer for twenty years, Anne Price Yates began life as an artist. She studied at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh in the special Saturday Tam-O-Shanter and Palette classes from fifth grade. She painted with oil, acrylic, and casein paints by the time she was 13, majored in art at Florida State University, but stopped painting during her married years. In 1974, she began to seriously research her family history. After publishing Increase in Prices in 1985, she published The Brothers Conway, the autobiographies of her two great-grandfathers. She has since published genealogical compilations by her father, W. Conway Price. After painting in France with an oil-painting plein-air group in 2000 and 2001, she continues to paint. In 2005 she moved from California to Oregon, where she was juried into the Watercolor Society of Oregon. While in California she was a member of the California Writers Club and became a member of the National League of American Pen Women in both Arts and Letters. She exhibited in numerous juried exhibits and galleries in New York and California as well as in Oregon and is currently represented by the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in Chelsea, New York, NY, and the Artists Haven Gallery in Ft Lauderdale, FL.
