Im Streit um den Umgang mit globalen Flüchtlingsbewegungen heben heute viele abwehrend die Hände, sie wollen die Grenzen dichtmachen. Da erinnern sich viele Deutsche ihrer eigenen Flüchtlingsvergangenheit: Rd. 22 Millionen Flüchtlinge, Vertriebene und Spätaussiedler aus den Ländern des aufgelösten Ostblocks sind von Kriegsende bis heute in Deutschland integriert worden. Als Hauptleidtragende der größten Flüchtlingsbewegung im 20. Jh. kennen sie die gewaltigen Hürden der Integration und sind sie Fremden gegenüber meist milder gestimmt. Zu solch einer versöhnliche Einstellung wollen auch die packenden Lebenserinnerungen des evangelischen "Wolhynienpfarrers" Hugo K. Schmidt auf jeder der 376 Seiten Mut machen. Deutsche Siedler waren, bedingt durch ihre Geschichte, stets bereit, mit Fremden zusammenzuleben. Fremdenfeindlichkeit, wie sie die Nazis später dem Volk überstülpen wollten, ist für Deutsche eher untypisch. Von Herzen wünschen deshalb heute viele, dass Abwehrhaltungen durch eine "Kultur des Willkommens" ersetzt wird. Hugo Schmidt, Nachfahre von Schwaben, der sich in der kurzen preußischen Herrschaft um 1805 einladen ließen, den Umkreis um die spätere polnische Industriestadt Lodz zu besiedeln, hat sich als junger Pastor der Evang.-Augsburgischen Kirche in Polen zum Dienst in den volkskirchlich geprägten Gemeinden Wolhyniens berufen lassen. Dabei war er wie einer "ersten Liebe" seiner seelsorgerlichen Aufgabe an diesen kernigen Menschen in dem heute ukrainischen Gebiet verfallen. Umso verstörendere Migrationserfahrungen erwarteten ihn und eine weitere 3/4 Million "Volksdeutscher" durch den Hitler-Stalin-Pakt: Beginnend im strengen Winter 1939-1940 wurden alle deutschen Volksgruppen vom Baltikum bis Südtirol zur notvollen Umsiedlung "heim ins Reich" genötigt, als seien sie Schachfiguren, eine erzwungene Völkerwanderung, die Hitlers Utopie vom "Lebensraum im Osten" im eroberten Polen Gestalt verleihen sollte.
