Doch im Lauf seines nie endenden Entzugs beginnt er sein Spektrum zu erweitern. Einen echten Freund findet er in Mick Ballou, einen Sidekick in dem gewieften jungen Herumtreiber TJ und eine Geliebte in dem ehemaligen Callgirl Elaine. Als Scudder vom Bruder eines obdachlosen Vietnamveteranen, der des Mordes an Anwalt Glenn Holtzmann angeklagt ist, engagiert wird, findet er heraus, dass am Opfer sowohl mehr als auch weniger war, als es den Anschein hatte. Zu seiner eigenen Überraschung - denn er liebt Elaine -lässt sich Scudder auf ein Verhältnis mit Holtzmanns Witwe ein. Die Auflösung des Falls ist eine logische Überraschung und wirft so manche Frage über die Indifferenz des Daseins auf. Obwohl Scudders Welt so trostlos ist wie eh und je, lässt er diesmal die Sonne ein wenig durchblitzen.
