In Search of the Unknown by Robert W. Chambers
Many years ago two wealthy adventurers, Rogahn the Fearless and Zelligar the Unknown, built a hidden complex known as Quasqueton Caves. From this base, they conducted their business away from the prying eyes of civilization. Although of questionable ethical standing, the two repulsed a barbaric invasion and gained support from the locals. Eventually, they gathered their army and set out on an expedition against said enemies, where they met their disappearance.
The player characters (PCs) enter the story at this point by listening to a series of voices provided on the module. Each PC knows one or more stories, although their veracity is somewhat questionable. The rumors are mainly about a great treasure hidden somewhere in the Quasqueton Caves, which the PCs can enter through a cave-like opening.
A variety of monsters wander through the finished upper level of the dungeon, including orcs, troglodytes and giant mice. The DM periodically checks to see if the group encounters these threats as well as the dangers in each individual room. Most of the rooms have empty spaces in which the DM places whatever monster or treasure is best suited to his campaign.
The finished upper level served as home for Rogahn and Zelligar and contains much of their personal possessions. A number of traps await an unwary group. Some of these rooms include an area full of swimming pools (some dangerous and some not) and a wizard's laboratory.
The randomly generated monsters in the lower and unfinished level differ from the ones above and include zombies and goblins. Some of the pre-filled rooms at this level include a museum, arena, and large cave, but many of the caves at this level do not include any description and the DM must devise the contents for these areas.
The end of the module includes a list of enemies and treasures that the group must fight and find. It also includes a list of characters from various classes that the party may encounter while exploring the dungeon. Also included are a number of pre-generated characters that the party could use to play in the adventure.
