Flamingos are found in the Caribbean, South America, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe -- and at times in pretty unfriendly habitats, such as the caustic soda lakes of Kenya. They're born with grey feathers, but the amazing and beautiful pink coloration comes from the pigments in some of the foods they eat -- shrimp, plankton and algae. Their feathers aren't all that's pink -- so is the interior of a flamingo's egg, the egg yolk, the milk parents feed chicks (which is produced in glands lining the upper digestive tract), their skin and even their interior flesh. Pink even plays a part in their mating ritual. Not only that, but the pinker birds are the ones that are dominant in the colony.
Flamingos are non-migratory, but may move if conditions warrant -- such as higher lake levels or drought. They can both swim and fly.
