About the Book

When the young earl Eileen hopes to marry is lost in action, presumed to be killed over a village near Cambrai, not long after the big battle there in the winter of 1917, she finds she cannot believe he is actually dead and formulates an extremely daring-and to all appearances utterly impossible-plan to find him and bring him home. Firm in the belief that she will find him still living, despite all the bad news and the seeming hopelessness of the whole situation, Eileen faces enormous odds putting her outrageously bold plan into action, and along with Lieutenant Turner, her observer, goes through some intensely harrowing adventures. Initially, these take place in the air over the Western Front and then on the ground behind the enemy lines and in the trenches as she determinedly pursues her quest through every difficulty to locate her friend. Finding him seems a virtually impossible task indeed, but it is while attempting to get back to their own side, and then to safety, that the situation becomes really grim...
About the Author: I have always lived very much in my imagination and for as long as I can remember stories and the characters I would invent in my mind were as real to me as life itself. Through schooling, and books read for the sheer pleasure of learning, I, and one of my sisters in particular, developed a great interest in history and would invent stories woven around real historic events. We would make up a lot as we went along, and using a doll's house and paper cut-out figures that we drew to represent our characters, we would send them into all manner of exciting adventures, usually based around some point during the turmoil of the Great War, or the years immediately afterward. Many of the characters we invented became so three-dimensional that even years later they are as alive as they were at the time and stories involving them still form in my imagination, causing me to decide that I would write some of them into stories for others to read, and hopefully enjoy as much as we do. My historic interests are mostly focused on the military aspects of the period between the last half of the 1800s to the Second World War, and this is reflected in my writing. The stories we imagined involved all kinds of most unlikely adventures and happenings coming upon our doll's house characters, and this is also very much to the fore in my writing, with most of the basis for a story coming from an event, or series of events, which in reality would most probably not turn out quite how my imagination had it unfold. However, there is always the exciting fact that, if one uses a little imagination, it really just could have happened, in spite of how unlikely it would be to do so. I like to adhere to realism and a factual basis for the events in my stories, but because they are purely imaginative fiction, just as their roots were, I love to weave a lot of fun, and sometimes even humour, around the more grim aspects which are very much a part of any story with war as a subject, for my intention is to entertain with my writing.
