Nach fast 10jähriger Abwesenheit in Krieg und Gefangenschaft kehrte Karl Pausch (1911-1996) kurz vor Weihnachten 1949 zu seiner Familie zurück. Als einziges Mitbringsel übergab er der Familie ein kleines, in schwarzes Kunstleder gebundenes Büchlein, das er unter Gefahren durch die Kontrollen gerettet hatte. Das 'Taschenbuch', wie er es selbst bezeichnete, ist eine Art Tagebuch des Jahres 1947 in russischer Kriegsgefangenschaft. Darstellt werden in Bild und Text Alltagssituationen des Lagerlebens und der Zwangsarbeit. Aber auch Reflexionen über die Hintergründe und Lebensumstände des Krieges sowie die stets präsenten Gedanken an die zurückgebliebene Familie und die Situation in der Heimat sind Gegenstand der Darstellung. Gedanken, die wohl auch die heutigen Flüchtlinge aus den Kriegs- und Krisenregionen bewegen. Anders als bei Briefen, Tagebüchern oder sonstigen Aufzeichnungen besteht die Besonderheit des Bändchens aber darin, dass der gesamte (Fließ-)Text in einer gezeichneten Schrift angelegt ist. In Einheit mit einer Vielzahl von Vignetten, kleineren und ganzseitigen Zeichnungen bildet das Ganze eine Art Buch-Kunstwerk. Der Herausgeber versucht, die Zeit, von der das 'Taschenbuch' handelt, in den Rahmen eines gelebten Lebens zu stellen: Neben Erinnerungsstücken aus dem Nachlass des Autors schien es sinnvoll, Erläuterungen und eigene Erinnerungen an die Person und die damaligen Lebensumstände beizutragen.
About the Author: Karl Pausch Geboren 23.1.1911 in Freising bei München, gestorben 25.8.1996 in Herford/Westf. Ab Januar 1940 Kriegsdienst zunächst in Frankreich, anschließend an der Ostfront, wo er 1945 in russische Kriegsgefangenschaft geriet. Karl Pausch war gelernter Schriftsetzer-Meister. Bis zum Beginn des Kriegsdienstes arbeitete er in diesem Beruf. Über das Handwerk hinaus bildete er sich im grafischen Bereich weiter (u. a. an der Leipziger Akademie für Graphische Künste und das Buchgewerbe), entwarf Bucheinschläge, Prospekte, Lesezeichen etc., in denen stets das typografische Element eine zentrale Rolle spielte. Sowohl während des Kriegsdienstes in einer Felddruckerei wie auch phasenweise und in der Freizeit während der Gefangenschaft in Russland hatte er Gelegenheit, sich in diesem Bereich weiterzuentwickeln, wie das hier vorgelegte 'Taschenbuch' beweist. Nach seiner Rückkehr begründete er ein eigenes Atelier und arbeitete als selbständiger Grafiker bis in die 80er Jahre. Auch dabei war Schrift stets ein sorgfältig und individuell gestaltetes Element. Berücksichtigt man, dass in dieser Generation von Grafikern bis zum Verbreitung leistungsfähiger Grafikrechner wichtige Schriftelemente stets von Hand und individuell gezeichnet wurden, so erklärt sich die handwerkliche Sicherheit bei der Schriftgestaltung.
