En París, el 15 de abril de 1874, una treintena de jóvenes artistas de vanguardia, entre ellos Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Auguste Renoir y Alfred Sisley, realizaron la primera exposición de sus obras pictóricas. Todos ellos buscaban una nueva forma de expresión artística. Después de esta exposición y en broma, el periodista del periódico Charivari Louis Leroy, basándose en una pintura expuesta, titulada "Impresión, Soleil Levant", de Claude Monet, los llamó Impresionistas. La definición era correcta; los jóvenes artistas buscaron expresar en sus pinturas; la primera impresión directa y pura de las cosas, lo que sentían por dentro, sin preocuparse por las reglas generalmente aceptadas, y sin influencias intelectuales. Estos artistas se esforzaron por expresar en sus lienzos no sólo su conocimiento de las cosas o lo que su formación les había enseñado. Su visión dependía de la luz y sus variaciones, que eran los objetos de las pinturas. Los paisajes, los colores y las impresiones eran más importantes que las imágenes, religiosas, mitológicas o históricas. La naturaleza era su principal preocupación; la mayoría de las pinturas se realizaron al aire libre sin notas previas. Comenzaron y terminaron en el mismo lugar y se realizaron lo más rápido posible debido a los cambios de la naturaleza. Ahí residía su extraordinaria originalidad. Estos artistas lograron plasmar las impresiones fugaces, el mar, el ciclo de las estaciones, las nubes móviles, el sol, sus vibraciones, el humo, sus formas imponderables, el elemento líquido y la nieve. Antes que ellos, ningún otro pintor había dado a la naturaleza una imagen tan fielmente viva y luminosa. La primera exposición de los impresionistas fue un fracaso económico; hubo pocas ventas. Sin embargo, la nueva propuesta de visión estética se extendió rápidamente a otros países, incluido Estados Unidos. Entre las décadas de 1890 y 1910, el impresionismo estadounidense floreció en las llamadas "colonias de arte"; grupos de artistas que vivían y trabajaban juntos y que compartían la nueva visión estética. A pesar de haber sido inicialmente rechazado, el movimiento impresionista representa un hito en la historia del arte por el impacto que tuvo posteriormente en las multitudes.
