Jahrhunderts ist aus wirtschaftlicher Sicht von mehreren Krisen überschattet. Aufstrebende, junge Technologieunternehmen dominieren zu Beginn des Jahrhunderts die Aktienmärkte und gelten als zukünftiger Erfolg der westlichen Industrieländer. Internet und mobile Kommunikation schienen der Welt, auf der Schwelle zum neuen Millennium, zuvor nie dagewesene Möglichkeiten zu eröffnen. Die Börsen spiegelten die Euphorie der Anleger durch immer weitere Kurszuwächse wider. Doch im Jahr 2000 wich die Euphorie der Ernüchterung. Erste Anleger begannen, die wirtschaftlich positiven Aussichten der aufstrebenden Unternehmen zu hinterfragen und lösten durch Wertpapierverkäufe eine Panik auf den internationalen Aktienmärkten aus. In Folge stürzten die Aktienwerte an den Börsen ab und bescherten Kleinanlegern in den Industrieländern hohe Vermögensverluste. Die New-Economy-Blase war geplatzt. Kurze Zeit später ließen die Ereignisse des 11. Septembers 2001 der Welt den Atem stocken. Tausende Menschen fielen den Anschlägen auf das World Trade Center und das amerikanische Verteidigungsministerium Pentagon zum Opfer. Nicht nur das Zentrum der amerikanischen Wirtschaft war getroffen. Das erste Mal seit dem amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg sprach die Welt von einem Krieg auf amerikanischen Boden. Durch diese neue Form von Terror sahen die westlichen Industrieländer erstmalig nach Beendigung des 2. Weltkrieges und des kalten Krieges eine Gefahr für den aufgebauten Frieden. Um diese neue Form des Terrors zu bekämpfen, reagierte die USA mit militärischen Einsätzen in Afghanistan und dem Irak. Aus Angst vor einer wirtschaftlichen Rezession senkte die US-Notenbank die Leitzinsen, um die amerikanische Wirtschaft mit günstigen Krediten zu stützen. D
