About the Book

An old wisdom states that crime is the root of all riches. Oscar Ortiz, a fun-loving, astute guy, follows this wisdom on his odyssey from bitter poverty in his childhood to infinite wealth in middle age. As a solitary man, he has made a good living, but when he crashes to the lowest point in his life, it requires the support of two women to help him get back on his feet. Both play a big role in his impetuous journey around the globe. Vanessa, intelligent, strong-willed and, if necessary, brutal, helps him, on behalf of the second generation of Colombian drug lords, to establish a worldwide network of legitimate companies that lets the trafficking of illicit drugs be shrouded in legality. Silvia, his great love, finally turns the solitary man into a family guy. At the end of his dreams, Oscar turns his back on the drug business. But he does not find peace, because the drug lords do not forgive him for his active involvement in Pablo Escobar's downfall and they never forget who knows their business and knows too much about it. Four dramatic years in Oscar's life reveal what is wrong in the fight against drug trafficking. The drug barons, raking in trillions of dollars with their trade, have the financial clout as well as the intelligence to outsmart the drug investigators and stay one step ahead of the drug agencies.
About the Author: T.S.Aguilar worked and lived with his wife Cathy for several years in Mexico. They made a couple of documentaries on archaeological digs in Guanajuato at first and later worked as teachers in the state of Coahuila. Besides getting first hand experience of the corruption of police and politicians that plagues the country, they got to know and befriend some of the most wonderful people they had ever met and with whom they had sometimes endless discussions and conversations. Thus, they became aware of the daily struggle of the common people to survive and improve their lives. Based on many of the conversations, the novel entitled "Shafted" is not so much fiction as it is actually a collage of facets of daily life in the worst of workplaces in Mexico - the hundreds of illegal mines still in operation. T.S.Aguilar lives in Canada at present.
