About the Book

Plants are very valuable assets of man without which he could not have survived on earth, but some unwanted and undesirable plants interfere with the utilization of land and water resources and adversely affect the human welfare. The concept of a weed is very subjective. A plant may be a week to one person and a useful plant to another or a week in one place but not in another, or a weed at one time of year and a valuable plant at anothe season. It is also known that weeds cause enormous losses by way of reduction in crop quality and quantity, wastage of human energy, etc. Adequate and timely suppression of weeds is essential to obtain full potential of crops. Weed management is not more simply a manual weeding but it is now planned as scientifically as the crop management itself, based on certain ecological principles of plant community and good crop husbandry practices including the prevention of weeds. Other methods of weed control such as mechanical, chemical and biological have been made available to control weeds in various situations, both before and after germination. In spite of dominating influence of herbicides on modern weed control teachnology, the manual, mechanical and cultural practices will continue to play a vital role towards strengthening the concept of integrated weed management and to help avoid the possible hazards on soil and the environment. This book consists of 10 chapters, ranging from concepts of weed, weed management, integrated weed management, herbicide selectivity to control of problematic weeds. Chapters on herbicides-resistance crops and weedy rice are also terminology and short questions like fill in the balnks, matching, true/false, multiple choice questions are also given along with keys.
