Imago bedeutet übersetzt Bild oder Bilder. Das Wort Image lässt sich zum einen auf Personen übertragen, kann sich aber auch auf ganze Gruppen beziehen. Jede Person liefert Bilder, durch sein Verhalten oder sprachlichen Ausdruck. Kleidung kann beispielsweise auch dazu betragen. Jede Form von verbaler und non-verbaler Kommunikation trägt dazu bei, Bilder zu schaffen. Im Vordergrund dabei steht immer die Aufgabe des Image, wie bin ich und wie sollen mich andere sehen. Diese Aufgabe ist keinesfalls als ein einmalige Akt zu verstehen. Menschen ändern sich, beispielsweise auf Grund von Erfahrungen oder generell durch Erlebtes. Dadurch kann sich auch das "Image", oder besser gesagt die "Images", verändern. Durch die Betrachtung anderer, wird dem Individuum klarer, wie will ich wahrgenommen werden beziehungsweise wie möchte ich nicht von meiner Umwelt wahrgenommen werden. Jedes Individuum verarbeitet und liefert ständig Bilder. Diese Bilder wiederum werden von anderen aufgenommen und verarbeitet. Durch die Verarbeitung und Analyse der Bilder entstehen beim Betrachter wieder neue Bilder. Diese neuen Bilder führen zu wiederum neuen Bildern, welche den Betrachter zum Sender von Bildern macht. Es handelt sich also um einen ständigen Kreislauf. Jedes Individuum ist damit beschäftigt Bilder aufzunehmen und selbst Bilder auszusenden. Dieser Prozess kann allgemein als "Imagebildung" verstanden werden. Der Mensch versucht sich über diese Bilder -Images - zu definieren. Wer bin ich und was versuche ich nach außen hin darzustellen? Diese Frage treibt Personen ständig an und kann zu einer möglichen Verwirrung führen. Durch eine Zunahme von Bildern durch eine von Glob
