Es ist eine unwirtliche Brache an der schmalsten Stelle der Insel zwischen Ostsee und Achterwasser, die durch den Maler erst zu einem Ort wird. Lyonel Feininger verbringt zu Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts einige Sommer auf Usedom, wo er zu seiner Art der Umsetzung des Gesehehen findet. Ausgehend von Zeichnungen nach der Natur, einer Methode, die auch Otto Niemeyer-Holstein anwendet, entwickelt er seine für ihn so typische prismatisch-kristalline Darstellungsweise. Ein Jahrhundert zuvor findet Caspar David Friedrich, in Greifswald geboren, auf Wanderungen an der Ostsee zu seinen großen Themen. Alle drei Maler zeichnen vor der Natur und malen ihre Bilder im Atelier. Sie arbeiten aus sich heraus, im Dialog mit dem Sujet. Es sind die in der Landschaft gemachten Notizen, die ihren Gemälden zugrunde liegen. Keinem der drei genügt die bloße Abbildung. Die Realität wird von Friedrich durch die von der Romantik gefeierte Mathematik transzendiert. Geometrische Figuren wie die Hyperbel, Proportionen wie sie der Goldene Schnitt vorgibt, stecken als Bauprinzipien unauffällig in seinen Bildern, die auf den ersten Blick allein der Natur folgen und schaffen eine tiefere Bedeutung. Niemeyer-Holstein geht von der Farbe aus, seinem Empfinden, seiner Erfahrung, seinem Vorwissen. Feininger empfindet in zunehmendem Maße ein Ungenügen am bloßen Abbilden und sucht nach einer Struktur, die für ihn hinter der Natur erscheint. Eine zweite Ebene, die man auch Transzendenz nennen könnte, ist freilich für die beiden jüngeren Maler nicht im engeren Sinne im Religiösen zu suchen. Doch die Erhabenheit der Begegnung mit dem Meer ist bei allen dreien auf ihre Weise verwirklicht.
