Lovecraft, considéré aujourd'hui comme le continuateur génial du grand Edgar Allan Poe et qui inspire, cent ans après sa mort, aussi bien des écrivains que des réalisateurs de séries ou de films, Lovecraft ne trouva jamais d'éditeur pour ses contes et il dut se contenter de les voir imprimés dans des magazines populaires destinés à un vulgaire public de "joyeux crétins". Les soucis quotidiens, la gêne permanente, l'amertume d'assister à la disparition d'un monde qu'il aimait et le mauvais accueil fait par le public à ses oeuvres eurent raison de lui et il s'éteignit dans sa quarante-septième année. Cependant, les lettres dessinent aussi l'attachante figure d'un original, d'un artiste au sens plein du mot, d'un homme amical, doué d'un humour rare, tout imbibé d'une sagesse personnelle, sorte de stoïcisme à la façon d'un gentleman britannique, et qu'il résumait ainsi: "du repos & de l'oubli; ou du moins, une réclusion solitaire au milieu d'endroits anciens où je pourrai me débarrasser du monde moderne actuel dans une tranquille routine de lectures, d'écriture et de pèlerinages dans des lieux pittoresques et historiques".
