Nelle prime ore del mattino del 28 dicembre 1902 una giovane madre si toglieva la vita sparandosi un colpo di pistola alla testa. Aveva lasciato un biglietto, riconosciuto autografo dagli stessi famigliari, ma che non spiegava le ragioni di quel gesto. In un primo momento nessuno aveva dubitato del suicidio, ma poi i sospetti per quella morte caddero sul marito, il tenente Vito Modugno, veterano delle campagne d'Eritrea e decorato al valore nella recentissima guerra di Cina.Nasce così, con le tinte del giallo, il più clamoroso caso giudiziario e politico dell'Italia del primo Novecento. Il rumore suscitato dall'arresto e il rinvio a giudizio dell'ufficiale, aveva sollecitato la voglia di protagonismo di qualcuno dei reduci della spedizione cinese. In un crescendo di testimonianze, raccolte dai giornali radicali e socialisti, i militari in congedo accusavano il tenente di reati gravissimi: stupri, saccheggi, rapine, omicidi e violenze di ogni genere ai danni della popolazione civile. Accuse che avevano creato grande imbarazzo nel governo e nell'esercito e che avevano spinto la magistratura militare ad emanare un ordine di arresto.Nel marzo 1905 cominciava il primo processo a suo carico. Furono chiamati a testimoniare ufficiali e soldati che presero parte a quella spedizione e il dibattimento divenne l'occasione pubblica per svelare agli italiani la realtà della gloriosa guerra in estremo Oriente.Una storia affascinante, rimasta per più di un secolo dimenticata e sepolta negli archivi, ricostruita e raccontata per la prima volta in questo libro. Sullo sfondo dell'intreccio romanzesco da Belle Époque, si delineano i caratteri della giovane Italia dei primi del Novecento, ma soprattutto si rievoca un episodio dimenticato e sconosciuto del colonialismo italiano: la guerra di Cina del 1900.Nuova edizione arricchita di immagini e documenti.
