A Londra, il proprietario miliardario della Quadrophenia Records, Frank Thomas, viene rapito da due adepti di una setta di fanatici religiosi introdotti nel suo appartamento durante un festino omosessuale. Uno degli amici di Thomas viene freddato con un colpo di pistola alla testa, mentre un altro ospite e lo stesso Thomas vengono condotti con calci e spintoni fuori dall'appartamento numero 57 del Samarkand. Prima di uscire uno dei rapitori posiziona un disco in vinile sul piatto di un vecchio grammofono della collezione di Thomas. Non un disco qualunque, ma di uno dei capolavori assoluti del rock: The Wall. Si tratta di un indizio che se interpretato correttamente porterà al nascondiglio del prigioniero? � l'ipotesi della neo detective Janis Atkinson che, desiderosa di mettersi alla prova e di mostrare il proprio valore, decide di risolvere il caso. Non essendo esperta di musica rock, Janis ha però bisogno di qualcuno che la aiuti ad interpretare la stravagante traccia lasciata dall'assassino. Questo qualcuno lo troverà per puro caso in Mitch Zinneman, proprietario del negozio dove il disco è stato acquistato e profondo conoscitore di musica rock. Mitch riuscirà ad estrapolare l'indizio che i rapitori hanno lasciato "utilizzando" le parole di The Wall, rompendo la diffidenza iniziale di Janis e soprattutto del suo superiore, il capitano Winston McIntosh. In una corsa contro il tempo, Mitch condurrà gli agenti del Criminal Investigation Department a quello che sospetta essere il covo dei rapitori ma dove invece troverà un secondo indizio lasciato dai rapitori sempre legato al mondo del rock: lo spartito di Supper's Ready, la leggendaria suite dei Genesis. Avvalendosi dell'aiuto del professor Michael Bulsara, docente alla Royal Academy of Music ed esperto di progressive rock, Mitch decifrerà le parole visionarie e allucinate di Peter Gabriel, riuscendo ancora una volta a individuare un nuovo luogo indicato dal rapitore: il mitico Hammersmith Apollo. Qui Janis e Mitch si imbatteranno in un macabro rinvenimento: tra le poltroncine dell'ultima fila troveranno il cadavere della seconda persona rapita assieme a Frank Thomas, Haroldo Rodriguez. Prima dell'esecuzione, il povero Haroldo è stato costretto dai rapitori ad indossare una stravagante tuta attillata con dei colori sgargianti che Mitch è certo di avere già visto. Ma quando? E dove? E, soprattutto, indossata da chi? L'illuminazione gli arriverà durante la notte seguente, nel suo squallido appartamento nella periferia di Londra. Il nuovo indizio del rapitore conduce ad un palazzo di Heddon Street, la stradina del centro di Londra nota per essere stata il luogo dove David Bowie posò per la foto di copertina del suo album più famoso: The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.
