Guido Pagliarino aveva scritto questi due racconti lunghi, giunti ormai, con alcune varianti, a quattro edizioni, nel 1994 e nel 1995, di poco anteriormente alla proliferazione dei gialli e polizieschi italiani dietro al "fenomeno" Camilleri (com'è noto, il primo romanzo basato su Montalbano, "La forma dell'acqua", è pubblicato da Sellerio nel 1994). Sono basati sulle figure di Vittorio D'Aiazzo, commissario e poi vice questore, e di Ranieri Velli, suo aiutante e amico, personaggi che nascono nel 1991 col romanzo "Il metro dell'amore tossico" e ritornano in molti altri fin all'ultimo, un prequel, "La collera degli umiliati". In tutti l'autore ha posto in primo luogo attenzione alle psicologie e agli ambienti. Ne sono destinatari anzitutto i lettori di narrativa in generale che, pur non disdegnando opere che trattino di delitti, non abbiano gusti alla paprika; non ci si aspetti dunque racconti alla Raymond Chandler o James Ellroy o, per stare in Europa, alla Manuel Vazquez Montalban; ma neppure, d'altro canto, si attendano indagini arzigogolate, ben poco verosimili, come quelle ideate da Agatha Christie. Nel primo racconto, "D'Aiazzo e il mostro a tre braccia", ambientato nel 1959, viene picchiato a morte da ignoti un antiquario e restauratore torinese, uomo dal fisico deforme che, alla nascita, era stato abbandonato dall'ignota madre ed esposto alla carità delle suore d'un istituto religioso torinese. Dal nulla, lavorando senza posa era divenuto proprietario d'un negozio all'ingrosso e al dettaglio in zona Porta Palazzo. Le suore sue educatrici lo ricordano come persona di bontà quasi angelica e così pure è per altri come la giovanissima sua magazziniera Mariangela. Proprio il contrario affermano Giulia, avvenente e disinibita sua ex dipendente, adesso prostituta, e un altro dei suoi magazzinieri, Alfonso, e così pure è per alcuni piccoli commercianti suoi clienti: per tutti costoro, era stato un individuo furioso e vendicativo. Nel secondo racconto, "D'Aiazzo e i satanassi", che si svolge nel 1961, è ritrovato in strada da un'auto della Polizia, steso a terra sul proprio sangue, il cadavere d'un attempato piccolo industriale, il commendator Paolo Verdi, il cui giovane figlio Carlo, dottore in psicologia, è in prigione in attesa di giudizio, accusato di violenza carnale a Giuseppina Corsati, dattilografa del padre, poco più che adolescente; ma il giovane dichiara al commissario D'Aiazzo d'essere privo di colpa e ne chiede aiuto per discolparsi. In carcere egli continua a essere oggetto di brutalizzazioni da parte di alcuni altri detenuti: forse a causa del distorto senso di "giustizia" per il quale i violentatori vengono vessati da compagni di detenzione, oppure per mandato esterno di qualcuno, vero colpevole, affinché si lasci condannare senza difendersi? Dal profondo delle vicende affiorano sulfuree esalazioni, che il commissario ventilerà riuscendo entrambe le volte, o quasi, a fare giustizia.
