La mayoría de los estudios plantea que la Iglesia Católica puertorriqueña se americanizó, conforme a una política orquestada desde la Santa Sede para apoyar la americanización de Puerto Rico. Americanizar la Iglesia hubiera significado configurar la estructura eclesiástica insular al modelo de la Iglesia Católica estadounidense, bajo los decretos del Tercer Concilio Plenario de Baltimore que tenían fuerza de ley para la Iglesia de dicha nación. Después de haber realizado la consulta, exploración y análisis de todos los acervos documentales disponibles en Puerto Rico, la investigación del presente libro se encaminó hacia varios objetivos. Primero, entrelazar las dos coyunturas históricas: la Iglesia antes y después de la invasión. Analiza cómo la crisis que enfrentó la Iglesia en el 1898 no era sólo producto de los acontecimientos políticos del momento, sino también resultado de un proceso de crisis interna que ya se había iniciado antes de la invasión. Segundo, se expone una nueva explicación sobre la política de la Santa Sede referente a la Iglesia en Puerto Rico desde la invasión hasta la muerte de Monseñor Jones. En otras palabras, qué papel jugó la Santa Sede para salvaguardar la Iglesia y estabilizarla. Tercero, además de indagar las estrategias económicas y sociales de la Iglesia, este estudio se enfoca en un punto olvidado y relegado por la historiografía eclesiástica: los laicos. Se examina qué hizo la Iglesia para atender, atraer, educar, entusiasmar, evangelizar y motivar a este sector.De acuerdo con el autor, la Iglesia Católica de Puerto Rico de finales del siglo XIX se encontraba en una crisis institucional intensa, que se agravó con la invasión estadounidense del 25 de julio de 1898. El gobierno estadounidense trató, por todos los medios, de reducir la influencia de la Iglesia Católica en beneficio del protestantismo y puso la mirilla de sus cañones sobre ella. La Iglesia tuvo que enfrentarse, a la secularización de los cementerios, a una libertad de culto diseñada como política oficial del presidente William McKinley a favor de las nuevas misiones protestantes, a la expropiación de los edificios religiosos y, durante toda una década, a la confiscación federal de todos sus bienes inmuebles. La Santa Sede se percató de que, contrario a la tradición democrática estadounidense, la Isla no sería anexada, sino mantenida como colonia, razón por la que configuró toda una estrategia diplomática para enfrentar ese reto. La política y visión vaticana tuvo la misión de mantener el perfil hispanoamericano de la Iglesia Católica de Puerto Rico y tratar de conciliar la lealtad de los nuevos eclesiásticos designados para la Isla hacia Estados Unidos de América, mediante la selección de pastores estadounidenses. Este perfil hispanoamericano se unía, claramente, a la cosmovisión puertorriqueña en el sentido de que compartía, en común con América Latina, un conjunto de experiencias y valores propios tales como el idioma y la cultura en razón de haber sido parte de España. El traslado de Monseñor Blenk al Arzobispado de Nueva Orleáns y la elección de Monseñor Jones como nuevo obispo no constituyó, en forma alguna, una política americanizadora, sino una acción pastoral diplomática de la Santa Sede en defensa del catolicismo del País.
